An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale has hit China's Sichuan province. The tremor was felt across the entire region - shaking buildings in the capital, Beijing, as well as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. US Geological Survey said the quake struck 57 miles north-west of the city of Chengdu at 2.29pm local time (6.28am GMT).
Some 10 million people live in Chengdu.
Sorry for your loss. Stuff like that happens to us all. I’m sorry that it does. The best we can do when someone suffers loss, is to reach out and let them know we care. Let them know there is hope. Those who reach out today, will be comforted tomorrow.
You have my deepest sympathy for your loss. I know how painful losses like this can be. When my turn comes again, you can return the favor. It’s one of those no cost things in life that money can’t buy.
Love and understanding are free. Take equal parts when they are offered. Healing is not free, but the price is worth paying. Patience is the cost. If you can add in a little comfort to others during the process, the sooner you’ll be on your way.
Life sucks sometimes, in between all the wonderful things we will experince along the way. Your loved ones and friends need you. Be there for them.
I am positive Lazamataz was not trying to be mean. He’s really a very funny person and the attempt was at humor. Usually it comes off well, this time it didn’t.
Mostly we Americans feel so much compassion for you during this trying time. The pictures posted from your countrymen are unbelievably tragic, especially the ones of the injured children and the mothers grieving for their little ones either not found or not found alive.
I want to thank (and I can’t think of his name now but you will see who it is as you look at the pictures, he posted many pictures). But thanks so much to him for giving us a true vision of what’s going on there.
Don’t let one bozo (American slang for fool) give you the wrong impression. Stay around this site a while and read the other topics, you might like it enough to comment on issues other than the current tragedy. Most of us would welcome your perspective.
The water table was tapped. Interesting.
I hope all our new Chinese friends continue to provide information. Even when it is bad. This is a story we should follow, and FReepers should be the best when it comes to not relying too much on our news media. Right?!
When I heard they were being forced in, I was afraid I was going to be reading this type of report. So sorry to hear it...
Evidently the area they were going into was incredibly hostile to paratroopers.
Heart breaking.
I am curious what opinion you have of Americans and why? We are generally very nice people, why would you have a bad attitude towards us? Most of the stuff we buy here is Made in China. I think we have been partners in increasing the wealth of both nations, I can't understand why you would feel badly towards us.
One more thing about the man you commented about, he was defending Taiwan but it's because our society feels that every country should be allowed to be free and I think that's the point (right or wrong) that he was trying to make.
Anyway, I apologize for speaking about this at such a bad time. I'm sure you have many other things on your mind right now.
Yes, that’s true.
You have done a fantastic job of making us see so much more than we would have otherwise. We have a far greater understanding because of you.
We hear the numbers of deaths and think “how horrrible” but to see the faces of the people makes it much more personal.
Right - that is discussed in that pdf article also. I’d guess the liquified surface sank, pushing water out...
Elsewhere I’ve read that supposedly one town just sank out of sight - sort of an on land Atlantis!
I’ll second that...
BTW, are u guys all republicans? What does the liberals see through this tragedy
We are a conservative website. We believe in freedom, self-reliance, and as little government as possible.
That said, prayers for your countrymen. Sorrow has no ideology.
Interesting question. We are not all Republicans, this is a “conservative” website but yes, almost all are Republicans, a few Libertarians and a few Constitution Party.
Being conservative most of us love God and love our Country. The Constitution of the United States is the law of the land. That law gives us the right to free speech for everyone, we have the right to criticize our government. If you hang around here very much you will find we do that often! :) Our Constitution gives us the right to keep and bear arms (guns) and the intention of that is to make sure that the government doesn’t become too strong. The government is supposed to be run by the will of the people.
What do the liberals think? That’s a humorous question. There is a bit of a rivalry between us. They probably think it’s all America’s fault that this happened. Some how, some way, it’s our governments fault. I think they are more critical of the government that we are. However, they are still people and somewhere deep in their liberal chests, they do have a heart and I’m sure they would feel the same compassion.
