Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., faces enormous pressure from social conservatives to ignore his repeated commitment to change the GOP's platform on abortion.
"If he were to change the party platform," to account for exceptions such as rape, incest or risk to the mother's life, "I think that would be political suicide," said Tony Perkins, the president of the conservative Family Research Council, to ABC News. "I think he would be aborting his own campaign because that is such a critical issue to so many Republican voters and the Republican brand is already in trouble."
A senior Republican close to McCain told ABC News that building a more inclusive GOP is a top priority for the Arizona senator.

Well the National Republican party has no support from me after the way they’ve treated conservatives in the party for the last decade and a half.
Until the party rids itself of RINO turds they will lose and deservedly so.
I have a tough moral dilemma with forcing a 12 or 14 year-old child rape/incest victim to (a) spend 9 months of her life carrying the child of her victimizer; (b) suffering through the pains of a natal delivery which she did not choose and doesn't want (and which her parents don't want her to suffer either.
Frankly I can't see any moral upside in making a child or even an adult continue to endure the pain and trauma of rape to serve "the long waiting list" of adoptive parents.
McCrazy has been lying for many years on many topics, and this should be no surprise.
We’re seeing right now that his claims to have “heard the American people” on comprehensive immigration reform was a typical McCrazy whopper, because he’s out there RIGHT NOW talking up comprehensive immigration reform all over again.
At least his parrots won't have to keep running around trumpeting that big-lie anymore. Juan McLiberal is just running true to form. I expect him to keep moving even farther left as he keeps jettisoning conservatives and their long held and unmovable anchored social values.
Who knows, he might just go ahead and jump ship yet to his long time and fabled home (in his heart anyway) of the socially liberal Democrat party after he is sworn in. After all he will feel right at home in the democratically controlled and dominated Congress.
Your argument could very well be not only mine as well but for many other conseravtives as well. Thanx.
More inclusive GOP. How very consistent. All God’s children, eh?
If this were true why did they pick as the head of the GOP Platform Committee for the Convention a solidly Pro Life Congressman?
Bada ping! I read the article and thought, "what's with that headline?"... then I noted the article was from ABC/BS and realized it was just another propaganda piece. Should'a known!
The option should be given to those individuals who have been raped, incest or other confirmed illegal sex. Why should any illegal act be excused in this case just so you feel better. Maybe one of your siblings or other relatives be attacked against their will. You will still hold out for; no problem. Everything is easy when it isn’t you.
Flipper
I’ve posted this before and will do it again - abortion, as it is practised in 95+% of occurences is morally reprehensible and is state-sanctioned murder.
That being said, I don’t think it is upto me to decide what a victim of rape or incest must do when faced with the agonizing choices here. I am in favor of a rape/incest exception and think Tony Perkins is wrong.
No, Johnnie - you mandate it for when it might be necessary. I don’t think arguing in favor of a rape/incest exception is the same as arguing in favor of abortion for the “other 99.99999% of the time.”
Or, I might write in FRed.
IF he does this, he will lose in a landslide.
No cheers, unfortunately.
Full Disclosure: changing the party platform on abortion is inconsistent with appointing constructionist judges, as the underpinnings of Roe v. Wade are not supported by a strict reading of the Constitution.
There is some idiotic repub strategist on C-span spouting that Mccain can now concentrate on moving left to secure the dem and liberal vote noe that he has secured the conservative base.
Uhhhhh when did he secure the conservative base? I must have been sleeping!
Don’t believe it...ABC news...HA!
I’m already banging my head on the keyboard.
No offense, but what’s wrong with being pro-life except in cases of rape, incest or the life of the mother being in danger? That’s Bush’s position, and I don’t hear anyone criticizing him.
I concur.
So you think an abortion would cause the child no pain either physical or psychologic?
If an adult impregnates her, and another adult takes her to have a living being ripped out of her body, which rape is worse?
A delivery may cause temp pain, most of which can be alleviated by anesthetics. An abortion causes life long guilt and pain. I know which I would choose for my 14 year old daughter, God forbid we would find ourselves in that position.
