McCain has recently been making efforts to reach out to all sorts of people not traditionally associated with the GOP. He appeared on the View, the Daily Show, before black civil rights activists in Alabama, etc.
When is he going to make a serious effort to reach out to conservatives? How about promising to appoint strict constructionist judges? How about re-assurances on gun ownership rights? What about reducing the out-of-control spending of this administation? Does he take conservative support for granted? Does he even want them?
Maybe he sees that Obama and his kooky spiritual advisor have totally freaked most Americans. Apparently, he thinks he can build a coalition of RINOS, Independents, and Hillary Clinton Democrats. Those voters, combined with some sullen conservatives who will vote out of party loyalty and "stand by their man" like abused housewives, will be enough to assure him victory.
The media has long praised McCain for repudiating the "wingnuts", as they describe his party's base. If McCain can win without any effort to reach out to conservatives, then he will ignore them completely while in office. The conservative movement of Reagan of 1980-1988, and Gingrich of 1994-1998, is either dead or on life-support.

Thanks for clarifying. I wasn't questioning the estimate, just acknowledging that whatever the number we have a clear problem. We are in general agreement.
It's open season and he'll have four years to bag his limit.
Based on this comment, some will claim he is "pro hunting." ;-)
Norge, you are welcome to view my rejection of McCain any way you like. I understand your consternation, but I have gone out of my way to express what my concerns are. If you’re being honest with me, you should be able to understand my point of view, even if you don’t agree with it.
Thank you for discussing the issue with me.
Darn it, I’ve got to watch what I say around here. I didn’t mean to imply that!!!
LOL
You take care.
At this point I would rather see a third party candidate elected president. Then it would be a gridlocked government throughout the first term. We would be better off if the government just shut down except for the Pentagon.
This would probably gridlock the government but I would welcome it. A third party candidate would be accepted by neither party. But the less they get done the better for the company. The politicians won't be able to sell out our sovereignty or pull troops out of Iraq or increase domestic spending.
Your points may be valid or not, but I think your conclusion is wrong. However, please do what you must.
As for your contention that conservatism will suffer, I don’t agree. I believe that conservatism is taking a breather right now, but that it will revive sometime in the future.
I suspect that with your screen name you were around in ‘64 when it appeared that conservatism was almost dead, and was about to be buried. Those were not good days to be a conservative...yet it led to some heady days some 12-16 years later.
It will survive McCain, and surely it will survive Obama or Clinton. I would rather spend my last years with the lesser of the evils.
“And even on gun rights he has made accomodations to the right.”
A Republican nominee should not be “maiking accomodations to the right” he SHOULD BE THE DAMNED RIGHT.
Temper, temper.
Yea yeah, you KNOW I’m correct on this.
thank you for speaking the truth very succinctly.
IOW McCain KNOWS he is Bob Dole.
Thank you for the additional comments Norge. Take care.
Tell me - who will you vote for?
Apparantly, YOU don't get it. Sounds like you put too much stock into a rating that is meaningless if you are basing that on the idea McCain is conservative or even has remote conservative ideals (hint: he does not).
My vote was for Fred Thompson, but look what our options are right now. I was hard on Romney, but I would have gladly been able to support him at this time if it were he versus Obama/Hillary.
The conservatives could end up in the wilderness. This has been a problem coming ever since the big changeover of Dems becoming Republicans in the early 1990s. Many of them changed parties, but not positions. The Republican upper crust was never comfortable with the Reagan coalition, and works hard to weed out conservatives in the primary process.
Also would send a message to the Democrats she is more about power than principals if she abandoned her Democratic party.
That would perhaps put the final nail in the coffin of the Republican party. Having the enemy within the party would cause it to implode and would need to be rebuilt from the ground up (which is coming out way (hopefully sooner than later)) which is not a bad thing if we can re-state conservative values as a Republican trait as opposed to the moderate view that has become the norm of late.
If Clinton and McCain want it, they'll figure out some way to make it happen. I don't know if it's even a possibility. It may just be a great soap opera twist that some bloggers are putting out there for fun. However, if it wasn't for the fact that Hillary standing in front of the Republican convention waving would likely cause bigger riots than Hillary in Denver would cause, I suspect he would seriously consider it.
That is it, exactly! I am more angry with conservatives voting for McCain than anything else. He needs to lose.
