LAKE ARROWHEAD, Calif. — A coyote grabbed a 2-year-old girl by the head and tried to drag her from the front yard of her mountain home in the third incident of a coyote threatening a small child in Southern California in five days, authorities said.

The coyote attacked the girl around noon Tuesday when her mother, Melissa Rowley, went inside the home for a moment to put away a camera, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said in an incident report.

Rowley came out of the house and saw the coyote dragging her daughter towards a street. She ran towards her daughter, and the animal released the girl and ran away, said sheriff's spokeswoman Arden Wiltshire.

Coyotes have become more common lately, and not just in mountain communities like Lake Arrowhead. My father has lived in Orange County for about 35 years. But in the last few years his backyard has been visited several time by coyotes. And this was in broad daylight!

My father is in a well developed suburb. His yard is surrounded by cinder block walls. The coyotes are a new phenomena.

You may consider a move, though. You are hopelessly outnumbered by the fruits and nuts in the rest of your State.

Well if you can live with the inbred, banjo playing, toothless hicks that make up your state I'll get along fine too. So will Jim Robinson and his family who provide this conservative forum for you.

If people would take the opportunity (if their socialist communities would allow it) to just shoot AT coyotes every now and then, this would not happen.

You don't have to even shoot them, they just have to occasionally have a round launched in their general direction.

Of course, I just prefer to take the simpler approach and shoot them when I see them.

Which I agree with here. I’ve heard the saying many times, but it didn’t register. Thank you.

No one has mentioned it yet, but I really hope that baby receives the rabies vaccine. Three attacks in five days (or was it 5 in 3)? That is quite a lot. Do coyotes carry rabies? I’m thinking yes because they’re mammals. Has that been mentioned in the news reports?

BTW, the rabies series isn’t that awful anymore. In 1993, because we were going into a wilderness for an extended period, our entire family including our 3-year old, went through the propholaxis vaccinations. We had a series of three shots in our arms. I understand that post-exposure is a series of five shots, in the arm, not the stomach.

Yep. We should concentrate our efforts on those animals that will immediately attack, and take the offensive. We should ask other nations to go along with us in the offenive, but if not, we will go it alone.

:-)

Mine don’t play in the front. Traffic. I guard them like a hawk in stores though. We each have to do what we think is best under our own individual circumstances. I’m not comfortable blaming the mother, without knowing the situation though.
