BARACK Obama has conceded defeat to Hillary Clinton in today's Democratic White House primary in Indiana but, on the back of a win in North Carolina, offered himself up as the only candidate who could truly unite American voters.
"I want to start by congratulating Senator Clinton on what appears to be her victory in the great state of Indiana," Senator Obama told a rally in Raleigh, North Carolina - even amid uncertainty over who had actually won.
CBS News called Indiana for Senator Clinton, but others were more hesitant and, several hours after polls closed, NBC News and Fox News continued to categorise the race as too close to call.
Senator Clinton later claimed victory in Indiana.
Senator Obama thanked his supporters for his victory in North Carolina, which followed a difficult month marked by new controversy over his fiery former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, and his remarks that some working-class voters were "bitter".
"Because of you, we've seen that it's possible to overcome the politics of division and the politics of distraction, that it's possible to overcome the same old negative attacks that are always about scoring points and never about solving our problems," the Illinois senator said to cheering crowds.
He paid tribute to Senator Clinton as "a formidable opponent", and, while acknowledging that the results were unlikely to end the long-running and bitter battle between the two rivals, said the Democrats would come together to fight Republican John McCain in November's presidential election.

Empty of meaning, but full of flower-like pleasant-enough scents. And he is well-groomed!
That falls close to the border of “too much information”, lol!
Well, I was rereading what I wrote and although he’s a threat, I don’t think he can win in November. His novelty will have worn off by then, meaning alot of younger people won’t show up. All the national polls showed Hillary more likely to beat McCain and now alot of those voters will feel comfortable voting for McCain. We have to take the Presidency because we are going to lose alot in the house and senate and that scares me to death.
Keep digging that grave....LOL! Some of my best friends are black argument. I’ll give you a pass because you’re of a different generation. But my accusation still stands and I’m glad I had them remove your comment. Please think before you post.
We can lose the House and Senate, but if we lose the Supreme Court, that’s the end of us.
That too. Thank you for reminding us why McCain MUST be elected.
That's for what the lever is pulled, come November.
I avoid listening to that evil trickster like the plague! He can't be very good if I can't stand to listen to even one complete sentence.
When a person's words are so duplicitous and objectionable how could the way it is delivered mean anything at all?
Toastmasters will give anyone oratory skill. Compared to "The Great Communicator" Obama's pretentiousness is glaring.
THANK YOU, Commander Limbaugh, for your valiant and successful execution of Operation Chaos!
You make a valid point.
I was stationed in Fort Huachuca for some time and thought you people from Arizona were smart but I guess I was mistaken.
Brilliant retort. I’m so hurt.
