I was a teaching assistant at the University of San Diego, and I have three teaching evaluations. They were all spectacular.

Uh? Is this from the feminist prof? Every student is supposed to provide an evaluation at the end of the term. How come she only has 3? Are these evaluations from her adviser rather than from the students? humph - an English prof who can't make her point clear. Anyone who's been a TA would question this statement.

And yeah, she is out of her depth. : ) /Michigan snark

...I don't know why these people don't do a little research on job opportunities in the field before they set out on that long slog for a PhD in English.

They like to read and mommy and daddy are paying for college, no questions asked, so they major in English.

The get a BA and discover there is no job market, so they get a Master's on mommy and daddy (or Uncle).

After the Master's there are still no job opportunities and they are getting older, so they actually look. They find that they've invested six years of their life and the only related jobs are for PhD's.

So they go back to the trough and get their PhD. After that they actually send out resumes. They get zero takers. This is when they decide that the government just isn't doing what it should in supporting education, and/or they decide to switch and pursue feminist studies.

Why the heck was she talking about her “ecofeminism” in an English literature class?

Don’t dismiss an English degree in the right hands/mind.
I have a EE and had been working for some time when my wife graduated with an English degree. It wasn’t long before she had almost caught up to me in salary because she chose to go into tech writing in the 90’s.

Read “Economic Facts and Fallacies” (Sowell).

He goes into the harmful results of tenured faculty and the fact that universities get more money from research grants (into often worthless areas of study) than they do from tuition.

The students go to a university and pay huge $$ because of its reputation (based on research done by profs), and get taught by grad students while the prof is doing research to get more grant money.

In an economics class the Prof was on a many minute rant about "buy American, buy American, buy American". Seems OK right?

Actually, it doesn't, if an ECONOMICS PROFESSOR for gosh sakes doesn't understand the concept of COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE!

If my kid came to me with such a story about an econ prof, I would yank them out and demand a full refund!

Good for your wife. How practical of her ;-)

Myself, I got a degree in History because I thought that I would be a lifer flying jets in the Navy. Later I got an MBA, which is far more useful.

I’ve also done some technical writing like your wife.

GUILTY!

(Sorry, I couldn’t resist. I don’t post judgements on bad teacher threads, but in this case there’s more basis to the judgement than appearance. Anyone who would threaten to sue because someone was ‘unreceptive of “French textual theory”’ deserves to be exiled from all civilized society.)
