Charles Krauthammer: Smacking his forehead, Obama splits from pastor
Minneapolis Star Tribune ^ | May 4, 2008 | CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER

"I can no more disown [Jeremiah Wright] than I can disown my white grandmother."

BARACK OBAMA, PHILADELPHIA, MARCH 18

Guess it's time to disown Granny, if Obama's famous Philadelphia "race" speech is to be believed. Of course, the speech was not just believed. It was hailed, celebrated, canonized as the greatest pronouncement on race in America since Lincoln at Cooper Union. A New York Times columnist said it "should be required reading in classrooms across the country." College seniors and first-graders, suggested the excitable Chris Matthews.

Apparently there's been a curriculum change. On Tuesday, the good senator begged to extend and revise his previous remarks on race. Moral equivalence between Grandma and Wright is now, as the Nixon administration used to say, inoperative. Poor Geraldine Ferraro, thrice lashed by Obama in Philadelphia as the white equivalent of Wright's raving racism, is now off the hook.

These equivalences having been revealed as the cheap rhetorical tricks they always were, Obama has now decided that the man he simply could not banish because he had become part of Obama himself is, mirabile dictu, surgically excised.

At a news conference in North Carolina, Obama explained why he finally decided to do the deed. Apparently, Wright's latest comments -- Obama cited three in particular -- were so shockingly "divisive and destructive" that he had to renounce the man, not just the words.

What were Obama's three citations? Wright's claim that AIDS was invented by the U.S. government to commit genocide. His praise of Louis Farrakhan as a great man. And his blaming 9/11 on American "terrorism."

But these comments are not new. These were precisely the outrages that prompted the initial furor when the Wright tapes emerged seven weeks ago.

What color Kool Aid does the Liberal DemoRAT party want to drink at their convention celebrating the next corrupt dictator they’re nominating?

The greatest speech ever, has long been forgotten just a few weeks later. I just don’t understand it. I mean Chis Matthews wet his pants during that speech. What happened?

Krauthammer says the turning point was the venue. I love him and his columns but it seemed to me that Obama was most offended by Wright’s offhand remark that Obama originally distanced himself from Wright because he wanted to get elected. To me, it seemed Obama had no problem hearing Wright castigate whites and American and European culture but you better not call Obama a “politician” or you are off the reservation.

“Obama does this to pretend to voters that he suddenly had an epiphany. His only epiphany is sagging poll numbers from folks who finally woke up.”

Exactly.

"Obama's newest attempt to save himself after Wright's latest poisonous performance is now declared the new final word on the subject. Therefore, any future ads linking Obama and Wright are pre-emptively declared out of bounds, illegitimate, indeed "race-baiting" (New York Times editorial, April 30)."

Look, the little boy just took his ball and is going home now.

Baraq gets nailed in one lousy debate that should have never happened except for Operation Chaos and now it comes to this. He makes one quick speech and 20 years worth of hatred and bigotry gets wiped away and he has a clean slate.

I don't think it is that easy Baraq, most people are sheep, but even sheep can figure out on their own where the water bucket is if you lead them there enough.

"I can no more disown Jeremiah Wright than I can disown the American electorate"

Yeah right. Obama is toast.

Hang up your offensive, slick, logic suspending rhetoric Obummer, and fade into the obscurity you deserve.

Obama changed his mind on Wright for one reason only. Super delegates were calling his campaign in a PANIC.

I am beginning to believe that the entire Wright/Obama outrageous restatement and disavowal sequence was pure charade - an act, worked out and scripted in advance.

Wright’s task was to bloviate - to be as publicly and flagrantly outrageous as possible. Obama would then have his own opportunity to disavow his mentor and spiritual guide - to distance himself from the racist rhetoric that he had immersed himself and his family in for the past 20 years, as though it had never happened.

Wright did his job to perfection. He found two PERFECT opportunities, in two perfect venues, to attract the maximum possible attention to his screeds.

But Obama was not quite up to the task. Instead of seizing the opportunity to totally renounce, reject, and condemn reverend Wright and his wrongheaded “Wright” ideas, he tried to walk the tightrope between condemnation and rejection. But he fell off - to the left, of course - and has been falling ever since.
