In March, Nickels ended the purchase of bottled water by city departments and proposed requiring all new Seattle taxis to get at least 30 miles per gallon. Last fall, he hosted a conference for U.S. mayors on climate change and persuaded more than 700 mayors to sign on to a pledge to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions based on the Kyoto Protocol.

"Never mind that Kyoto was rejected by BOTH Clinton and President Bush....if the US won't sign it and make it Federal policy, we'll just adopt it anyhow because we're hysterical Lefties and that makes us so very much smarter than anyone else...."

Seattle voters deserve it...keep sending Socialists to high office, you get more and more and more and more and more of your hard earned money confiscated by the Greedy Hand of Government.

I agree with the charge for plastic bags. What a waste! I have used those large Sam’s insulated bags for years, and resent the waste that the throw-away bags produce.

The government has no businsss dictating this issue. The cost of bags is factored into the cost of goods charged by the stores. If the stores want to ‘’give’’ away bags with their groceries, it’s their business.

To be collected and spent by the political class.

(Here in NJ they say they want to tax fast food. They think we don't know they're already taxing fast food at 7%, which means NJ probably makes more on a Big Mac than the McDonald's shareholders do.)

Why not mandate all Seattle residents just kill themselves? That will reduce the city’s carbon footprint down to 0.

That would be regressive. They’ll need another government giveaway program for the poor to compensate. Isn’t it neat how this works?

Wasn’t it the enviro-wackos who made us switch to plastic bags some 20 years ago? What’s the problem, now?

Wasn't it not so long ago that we were to be taxed for using paper bags?

Whether it's paper bags or political correctness in a larger sense, we need to quit buying into the premise until these folks at least propose a sensible alternative that they won't change in a years' time. Just because they seem to enjoy chasing their tails (many of them literally) doesn't mean I have to join them.

I use my own bags a lot. I don’t use bottled water most of the time. I have a water filter squeeze bottle and two Culligan jugs I can refill at Walmart. I also compost. However, there’s no recycling where I live so I try to buy more glass than plastic. I think a person can be smart about green living. People don’t like to be TOLD what to do.

Besides, the plastic bags are recycled as liners for my juice machine then I use that same bag to clean out the catbox, never in reverse ;o) I usually pick extra plastic bags out of the plastic bag recycling bin at Walmart.

Store owners would keep 5 cents of the bag fee to cover costs. Smaller businesses that gross less than $1 million a year would keep the entire 20-cent fee. It would not apply to the smaller plastic bags such as those available in produce sections.

So the other 15 cents goes to the government. After that, who knows where it goes?

I just can't wait till they start taxing us for "sidewalk use". Next we'll have to pay a "birthday tax". One dollar for every year you've been here to plunder mother earth.

This is nuts, folks. Where will it end?

I've been using the reusable bags provided now by most supermarkets for a small fee and I find them to be much better. They are easier to carry from trunk of the car to the house, you can store more items in there and I personally do not mind it. Personally I find the reusable much better than the old "plastic" bags. Don't knock off this idea until you tried it for yourself.

My parents are using them too now, they both have OA and they find them better fit for them than the old style plastic bags.
