Colorado Woman Makes Plea To Sisters In Polygamist Compound

Story Of Arranged Marriages, Abuse Chronicled In New Book

Lane Lyon, 7NEWS Reporter

POSTED: 9:23 pm MDT May 2, 2008
UPDATED: 9:29 pm MDT May 2, 2008
DENVER -- When Texas authorities raided a polygamist compound last month, Laura Chapman took special interest.

"I thought about when I was little and thought about how I wanted to be adopted, and I wanted out of my family," Chapman said Friday.

Now living in Durango, Chapman was born into a polygamist family in Utah.

Chapman said she grew up on 6 acres in Sandy, a suburb of Salt Lake City.

"My father had four wives and I have 31 brothers and sisters," Chapman said.

During an interview with 7NEWS, Chapman spoke to several sisters she believes may be living in the compound in Texas.

"Carol, Andrea, Camille, Charlotte, if you're watching, your sisters out here love you and you can make that leap," Chapman said encouraging them to leave the polygamous sect.

Since escaping the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints religion in 1991, Chapman said she's been trying to blow the whistle in Utah about abuse and forced marriage to underage girls.

Chapman said doing so has put her at risk with devout FLDS members.

"If you become someone they see as a threat to the work of God, then they can spill your blood. They can kill you," Chapman said.

Chapman's story is now part of a book by local author Stephen Singular titled, “When Men Became Gods.”

That's an outrageous accusation and totally false. I have never defended them here or anywhere, or claimed anyone was lying or misinterpreted. Do your homework before you go making a fool of yourself.

You would do well to let the indignent here enjoy their steady self righteous echo chamber. They brook no questioning at all and most of these folks hate all Mormons with a passion I have rarely seen on this forum. I'm sorta surprised the moderators let it just run on and on. I believe I recall some similar Mormon bashing back around 2001 maybe when the mods did cool it off but I can't recall what it was over. It may have been about FLDS stuff.

Just look upthread. Same as any other FLDS thread. Mormons are followers of Satan. The men are all evil and the older women totally without any culpability...they were brainwashed you see but the men weren't.

Get it? Men are harder to brainwash I reckon or maybe women have no free will? Who knows? And the women who volunteer for FLDS?

Worst offense on this thread in my view is that while folks here purport to be so concerned about the women and children and yet they howl over how ugly or unfashionable the women are they purport to be defending....that's just tacky.

Some of the indignant here impress me about as much as the polygamists.

You can count on the fact that if you question one shred of their self professed infinite wisdom then by default you must be a Jeffs disciple at best or Satan hisself at worst.

My goodness, but you seem to have hit that nail squarely on the head. Disagreement with any point they care to pull out of their bag of tricks is grounds for immediate labeling as either satanic or pro-child molestation.

These threads exist primarily for Mormon bashing and secondarily for fembot male bashing...basically.

They are not open to conservative questioning.

I have looked at 100s of them and don’t recall any serious endorsement yet of Jeffs and FLDS on any of them but I could be wrong.

By the thresholds of infamy here if one:

1) question age of marriage customs

2) questions the hoax call

3) questions why FLDS is different or not from Smith, Young, etc

4) questions should all the kids have been taken

5) questions if some women volunteered

6) questions if any girl under 18 having sex with any guy over 18 is rape

7) questions why the adult women here have no free will

8) questions why the men raised in the sect couldn’t be brainwashed as well

9) question when will the government go after other groups here that have polygamy (Islam, African tribal) or allow older man/younger girl arranged marriages like (Hindu, some ultra Orthodox Jews)

any of that and by golly you must support these cults.

The children have no parents that have identified themselves. Homeless children need state protection. This should not be debatable.

Everything else is secondary.

More from Laura Chapman here: http://www2.journalnow.com/content/2008/may/01/distinctive-dress-can-reveal-more-than-belief/?living

< snip >

At 13, she prepared a cardboard hope chest for her future husband with baby bottles, pacifiers, blankets, diapers and sewing kits. She was taught to stay sweet, subservient and plain.

“I was told I should not wear form-fitting clothes because I was responsible for the men’s thoughts when they looked at me,” Chapman, 45, said on the phone from Colorado. “I’m looking as ugly as I can, and I’m still responsible for that?”

Some girls had natural beauty and shapes that dowdy clothes couldn’t hide. They were usually placed into marriages with powerful sect leaders, she said.

“Youth has a lot of power in an odd way and older wives get very jealous.”

I’m very Southern and Baptist and only have one Mormon friend in my life and she’s married to a Lutheran.

Nor do I indulge in polygamy. I have one wife and five children from baby to late teens.

My only historical connection that probably does give me some personal view is that several of my grandmothers and earlier female relatives so forth in the past married at 14-15 in the rural South to boys aged 18-22 and they lived good lives and raised good families and we cherished them. They were not raped by my grandfathers. That is utter poppycock.

Thanks wardaddy, that’s helpful.
I’m from the East Coast and very uninformed about Mormons and their offshoots. Some people don’t realize that not everyone in America is sensitized about a religious cult.
Hey, I live next door to a Muslim cult, and I don’t like it, but I don’t get wheezy when someone asks me to back up my opinion.

I think one can glean that they intentionally mislead and don’t trust government types at a minimum as far as explaining why they didn’t name parents or gave different answers at different times.

"I'm sorta surprised the moderators let it just run on and on."

Maybe because where possible, I try to post mostly what's been published in the news, or by people who have some knowledge of the group and the situation. For instance, I just posted a link to direct quotes from a church founder to one person who doubted that the doctrine exists--not that it mattered

But yes, the more I read, the more I form an opinion of the fLDS (not mainstream Mormons, but fLDS), and it's not a favorable one. I just really hate child and women abusers.

It's possible that the moderators keep an eye on the dailies. I have pinged them to this thread. If they find it offensive, I'm sure it will be gone quickly. Otherwise, I'm sure you know where the "abuse" button is.

The mothers pled with the authorities not to take their children....how could they do that without acknowledging that?

I should have added another clause to my questions list:

Do not question whether to believe everything the state says....I remember Waco and everything they said then....Elian too....and nearly all of it was BS.

that said though....there is no doubt there are some pregnant girls there.

but this thing about waterboarding their infants..... and marriages between 50 year old men and 8 year old girls....I’d like to see more about that to be candid

my view on taking kids was since the main worry was about the post pubescent girls, then why not take them only?

For legalities, please read post #17 on this thread; and for another legal opinion (from someone who has clerked for one of the USSC), here's a link. It would seem your armchair lawyering is a bit off.

There would be absolutely no doubt which kid was mine.

But I love to hear the rationalizations so please continue.

Just like a lost bag, the state has an interest to return the bag/child to its owner and keep it safe in the meantime.

So did my grandmothers....but they wanted to marry my grandfathers. And while my grandfather on one side was 15 years older than Granny, she adored him and wanted to marry him.

Same with my Grandma Zip-— married young to a man she wrote adoring letters too for 6 months (we still have those letters).

The issue is these girls not having a choice in who they’re given to as wives. Their wishes, desires etc aren’t considered. And yes, I do think it’s ugly for a 50 year old man to screw a 14 year old because, well...he can. Rape is when there is coercion, dishonesty, threats, lack of free will etc.

I’m pretty sure none of that was present with your grannies as well as mine.

Secondly, I hold the mothers just as culpable. A mother’s primary job is to protect her children. These women (and men) have failed. This is all about free choice and free will and freedom in its purest form.

Lastly, I know women who dress in ways I wouldn’t dress....because they want to, because they like it, because it expresses their faith etc. But again, it’s a choice. And if they get up one fine day and say “I want to wear a leather mini skirt and dye my hair purple!” they can.
So in that light, I just let it go.....

So these ‘ugly’ dresses are simply burkas, a way and method of control. And yes, the men do seem to be the winners in this—— multiple wives and many of them teens, plus all the BDSM behaviors on any erotica you can lay your hands on.

Again, consenting adults, I don’t give a rats pattootie....take away anyone’s free will (including the boys who get tossed because they get too old and too testosteronie) and you have evil on the hoof.

Well, I rarely ever ping mods. Maybe twice inn 8 years over I believe personal info posted once and Stormfront link another time

I remember the harpies all too well and they left a bitter taste in my mouth and got me a 1 year sabbatical from here over the illegals issue...sadly now many of them have come back after their anti-freeper sites have imploded

Pinging mods is to me most often the province of tattle tales.

I didn’t much cotton to tattle tales in grade school nor now.

I didn’t hit an abuse button. I simply pinged the mods in case this thread was not allowed. You’re the one who invoked the moderators in your original post, suggesting they wouldn’t or at least shouldn’t allow this thread.

PS,
you’re born into the FLDS, outsiders are coming in is nearly unheard of....

And for sure no females want to join (a few have returned when out of choice, but more have left).

Far from my rationalization. I don’t know for sure why, but thats what was reported by CPS. They are taught to do these things to mislead. I think that is why the state got the effort to get DNA testing started.
