"We are negotiating to launch an electric car with a Gulf state," Ghosn told a news conference here near Lisbon.

Who in their right mind would ever buy a Renault in the first place?

They are, without a doubt, the ugliest, most unreliable cars in the world.

Sure it rusted and had sloppy handling, but at least it wasn’t as bad as Alfa Romeo’s Alfasud. :-)

Granted, but any car maker can produce a work of trash. Alfa Romeo at least has a decent overall track record. Renault?

True. So, what cars make your list of all-time crap cars? The Fiat Strada and Austin Allegro are on my list. Also, the Ford Maverick makes my list. The squishy ride and cart-sprung suspension were an awful combination (especially when the front bushes and gaiters started to wear out). Of course, there are many others on the list.

No argument here. I happen to like Alfas, but I was just referencing another bad model. The Alfasud suffered from cutting too many corners in manufacture. It could have been a winner (it had good performance and handling).

I recall the reviews of Le Rustbucket in the auto mags. I had a cousin who almost bought a Le Car. She bought a Peugeot instead and loved it.

LeCar, I sold those things new.

They did get good gas mileage. And if driven carefully, you could go almost 25,000 miles between head gasket changes. 2 years was all you would get before the radiator cracked in the lower left corner. And every 2 years you had to rebuild or replace the clutch master and slave cylinders.

Did I mention they did get good gas mileage?

Holy cow! A new head gasket after 25k miles!?

Were you a Renault dealer?

I also recall the Renault Alliance.

Worked at a dealership.

The Alliance? I remember one that had 12 miles on the odometer. Salesman had just taken a customer for a test drive. While negotiating price, the car burst into flames and pretty much burned up.

No sale that day.
