What Happened to the Recession? Surprise! Bush Expansion Continues
North Star Writers Group ^ | May 1, 2008 | Dan Calabrese

I once heard Rush Limbaugh say the way he deals with a recession is to “not participate in it.” Today we found out that in our current so-called recession, the economy itself is not participating.

You’ve heard, of course, about the “recession.” The Associated Press has been referring to it as an established fact for much of the year. Every day, we see interviews with economists who grimly warn that we are surely already in a recession. The only debate is how bad it will get.

Oops. Some facts just arrived, and they’re not what the media, the economists and the Democrats had long since made up their minds was the truth.

We’re not in a recession. Not. The economy is still growing. It’s not growing at a break-neck pace, but it is growing, and that means there is more per-capita wealth in this country now than there was three months ago. A recession is happening when you have two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth. At present, we’ve had about 25 consecutive quarters of positive economic growth. So, recession? Sorry, we’re not in one.

“Worst economy in 50 years” redux

Seems to be appropriate now, as the above statement was not true then and is not true now.

I argued this all day yesterday. I agree with you though.

The liberals want to say that it is not the definition of recession. They prefer to use the NBER definition which is much more vague...

“A recession is a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales. A recession begins just after the economy reaches a peak of activity and ends as the economy reaches its trough.”

The growth measurement is dependent on inflation.

So, if you believe the gov’t inflation numbers you get this anemic growth. If you believe the gov’t underreports inflation, then ...

The left (Communists, Socialists, Democrats, etc.) are masters of the lie told but not opposed and told over and over and over again become, in many people’s minds, the truth.

I read your sentence 5 times and I just can’t make it sound right. However, I’m pretty sure I know what you mean.

We seem to have a recession every four years (but only when a Republican occupies the White House).

Since the democRATS took over congress in Jan 2007 the rate of growth has diminished from over 2.4 to 0.6%. Correlation coefficient is 1.0 +/- 0.05.

Is the 0.6% reported an annualized value?

I do not believe we are in a recession, although the economy is spotty. Some states are doing better than others.

We have inflation but that is driven by high fuel costs in the transport of manufactured goods, produce and raw materials. Naturally that is passed on to the consumer.

Much of the recession scare is driven by the crisis in the financial mortgage industry, which was initiated by overwriting in mortgages to a market that would not normally qualify , thanks to government initiatives in the mortgage market to have houses in the hands of those who could not afford them. Another example of why government should stay OUT of the market driven economy. The government managed to shoot itself in the foot and the mortgage industry along with it.

Meanwhile property purchases are at an all time high in both Miami and NYC, especially in the commercial market, where the Irish and Europeans are buying like crazy as real estate prices have declined. Recession, none there.

SO much of the recession is culturally and politically driven. It is not "statistically" indicated and may never be. Meanwhile its a good time to purchase stock and other bargain priced investments.

I expect the economy to be purring right along quite well in about 7 months if not in about 4 months.

3 weeks ago we bought one financial stock at 67.00 USD a share. Its now trading at 86.00 USD.Hardly what you would call a recessionary economy.
