CIA Director Michael Hayden said Wednesday that Iranian policy, at the highest government level, is to help kill Americans in Iraq, the boldest pronouncement of Iranian involvement by a U.S. official to date.
Hayden made the statement in response to a student question while delivering the Landon Lecture at Kansas State University.
"It is my opinion, it is the policy of the Iranian government, approved to highest level of that government, to facilitate the killing of Americans in Iraq," Hayden said. "Just make sure there's clarity on that."
In recent weeks, U.S. officials have ratcheted up their complaints that Iran is increasing its efforts to supply weapons and training to militants in Iraq.
Military commanders in Baghdad are expected to roll out evidence of that support soon, including date stamps on newly found weapons caches showing that recently made Iranian weapons are flowing into Iraq at a steadily increasing rate.
Another senior military official said the evidence will include mortars, rockets, small arms, roadside bombs and armor-piercing explosives known as explosively formed penetrators or EFPs that troops have discovered in caches in recent months. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the evidence has not yet been made public, said dates on some of the weapons were well after Tehran signaled late last year that it was scaling back aid to insurgents.
Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has said the U.S. prefers to resolve the issue through other pressures, but that it has the combat capability to strike Tehran, if necessary.
Hayden also said the recent Iraqi offensive in the southern Iraqi city of Basra should stand as a clear indication to Iraq's neighbors that it intends to be a credible force in the region.

It's depressing, disconcerting to read every other day how Iran id become more and more embolden, coincidentally, as America seems more and more unwilling, helpless to make Iran pay for all the years of accumulative punishment they so richly deserve, that only a glorious mushroom cloud over Tehran can ever atone for,
So when do we get to “Go Roman” on their ugly faces?
There should be nothing left of the Mullahs, the IRG, the Iranian navy and air force, and all nuke and WMD and missile sites after a rapid concerted bombing and cruise missile campaign.
G....u think???
We need some serious house cleaning in our intel...
“that only a glorious mushroom cloud over Tehran can ever atone for,”. There’s got to be a way to stop this, enough pussyfooting around. I HATE these people!!!
Michael Hayden....Rocket Surgeon.
I’m sure glad we hired this guy. He is really, really, smart.
The clock is ticking with Iran.
They need to be taken out—soon.
I can only hope President Bush’s Daytimer for May looks like this:
1. Jenna’s Wedding
2. Bomb Iran.
“Iranian policy, at the highest government level, is to help kill Americans in Iraq”
Thank you captian obvious..
I’m sure they all already knew it for quite some time. They’re just getting more bold in saying it out loud rather than behind closed CIA office doors. Good sign, I think. I just wish they’d do something about it pronto.
All of the people coming forward and making statements about Iran’s involvement in Iraq, are part of a campaign.
The gov’t is frustrating as heck, but this campaign is necessary and it’s setting everyone up for action that will be taken when they’re ready.
Our fearless leaders send another carrier to the Gulf in order to scare the mullahs again.
Dont worry, theyll row for a month before they figure out Im fakin it. the Deacon character in the movie, Waterworld.
And after all of the chicken-feces talk about Iran in our Sewing Circle Administration, I have complete faith in our President (AKA, the “Deacon”) and his Navy-administered Army command.
Combat Commander: Call for fire!
Admiral: No! I’m the boss! You won’t be getting any more fire support from us!
Moral of that short story: Don’t put any kind of artillery commander in charge of all of our forces, as great as our artillery commanders are at their job.
No one is going to hit Iran unless Israel consents to it, because everyone knows if Iran is hit it will launch a missile attack on Israel (from Iran itself as well as from Lebanon and Gaza, and possibly even Syria). Thus, if the US were contemplating attacking Iran the US would run it by Israel first. That’s just a reality. But, I think Israel will hit Iran itself, and not wait for someone else to do the heavy lifting.
DUH! WHat about the INTEL report that says Iran is no threat, that YOUR AGENCY ALLOWED PRESIDENT BUSH TO ACCEPT??
Mr. Hayden, lets send Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame, over to Iran in order to discover whether this is in fact true or NOT??
And why not leak to the NY Times that we can't fight the Iranians because we can't waterboard them in order to get INTEL?
And lastly, MR HAYDEN,where are the Iranians getting their YELLOW CAKE?
Mr Hayden, why are we not blowing the beejeesus out of the Iranian supply depots, like the Israelis did to the Syrian Nuclear Reactor that employed Iranian and N. Korean techies last fall?
Sadr City bloodshed kills 925 Iraqis ( Iraqi casualty figures for April)
IMO, we should at least be striking every Iranian military asset within reach, and we should be continuing until the stand down.
Unfortunately, nothing will be done, because there is an election coming in November, and Bush isn’t going to do anything dramatic, so as to not upset the apple cart — because no one can predict if the apples will roll to the right or left.
The Iranians fully understand this, hence their protracted strategy to bleed us in the hopes of a Democrat win, leading to a Viet Nam style withdrawal.
If we aren’t willing to do what it takes to protect our troops bring them home
“...when do we get to Go Roman on their ugly faces?”
Before Thanksgiving!!! (but, after the election!)
Nice to see Hayden finally opened his box of CrackerJacks and figured out how to work his Secret Decoder Ring.
