RED WING, Minn. -- Three-year-old Brady Arneson recently took 1st place in the 2008 Minnesota Mullet Contest put on by Hockey Moms Magazine.

Brady’s older brother Blake won the top mullet award in 2005.

Their dad, Goodhue County Administrator Scott Arneson, also had amulet as a child, but the award wasn’t around back then.

The mullet peaked as a hairstyle in the 1990s, but has stuck around with Minnesota hockey players who like the let their hair hang out the back of their helmet, Arneson said.

Blake hasn’t worn a mullet since he won the award and Brady isn’t planning on keeping it around, saying he’s excited to cut it off for the warm summer months.

I had an amulet as a child too - it wasn't in my hair though.

A Mullet?!? This is Child Abuse! This poor kid will be mentally scarred for life. Where's Child Protective Services when you need them?

See, those aren’t really purebred mullets. Those are all some bizarre Darwinian hybrid of a mullet and ‘80s metal hair.

Billy Ray Cyrus. Now THAT, my friends, was a Kentucky Waterfall at its very best.

You're right. At least the mullet guys do real work for a living--driving trucks, fixing sinks, etc.

Emos, when they have jobs, invariably work at the comic book store or at the popcorn counter in the movie theater.

Hey (sniff) life is pain and (sniff) pain is life. Why can't you just leave me alone to cut myself in private? Why do you have to be such a Fascist?

Only until after I spent sometime outside of Minnesota did I realize that this hairstyle has the connotations it does in other parts of the country. I associate it with with teenage suburban hockey players.

Besides, who says you can't have underground credibility with a mullet? It worked for these Minnesota boys...
