When I was in high school in the early ‘80s in Virginia, you didn’t see many mullets. We had a particularly obnoxious mutation called the “rat tail”...one tiny bit of hair hanging down the back of the neck. I saw so many little boys wearing those and I HATED it.

I remember the ‘rat tail’ thing very well, as it was popular in my rural town when I was elementary-school age. However, my young friends and I thoroughly appreciated them because they were very conducive to hair-pulling... us girls were happy that the playing field was becoming more level.
