RALEIGH - A hearing into the firing of a state trooper accused of mistreating his police dog opened today with a video of the officer kicking the dog as it was suspended from the railing of a loading dock. The 15-second video, taken by another trooper using his cell phone, shows Sgt. Charles L. Jones kicking the dog, Ricoh, five times. The dog was tied to the railing by its leash at the time, with its front paws in the air and its rear paws touching the ground. With each kick, the dog swung about two feet under the dock.

“Bullshit. He took action that got the cop FIRED.
Telling him to stop ends the beating temporarily. Getting him fired ends it permanently.”
Point remains...observer did NOT intervene....
Would that be Ok if it was a person being beat instead of a dog?
Just snap a few pics and show someone later?
assault on a K9 is assault on an officer....people are charged woith it all the time....even if the dog was biting them...
“Did he swing the dog around by the leash?”
YES...did you even read the article before you mounted a defense?
> First, Jones swung the dog in a circle in a technique known as “helicoptering.” The dog was swung in such force that it became airborne.
>
> Herndon testified that he did not object to the helicoptering but did become concerned when Jones took Ricoh by the leash and suspended him from the railing.
“...a technique known as ‘helicoptering’” ay. I seem to have missed that training technique for dogs. And this thug purported to be a dog trainer. Hmmmmmmmm...
I don’t have words for this.
Understood. I appreciate your talent for understatement.
Show me.
I wonder if the Dog Whisperer ( Cesar Millan ) uses the helicopter technique?
“I saw the video on Fox News”
Ah. Makes sense.
It seems you'd prefer the cop go over and say "pssst, stop beating that guy" and leave it at that. Does Herndon get no credit at all for getting the perp canned?
I would say the fact that he could not get the dog to release the toy with out using abusive means indicates that he is an exceptionally poor dog trainer.
Very true. Too many cops are morons.
Here you go:
“First, Jones swung the dog in a circle in a technique known as helicoptering. The dog was swung in such force that it became airborne.

Right from the article...
Swinging a dog by the leash is known as “helecoptering”....
The helicoptering isn’t on the video but was testified to by the witness. He didn’t think it was bad but drew the line at the hanging and kicking.
To be fair the article doesn’t say it was done by the leash. It could have been done by the hose in the dogs mouth, or by his ears. More likely it was done using the leash as that is what the officer used to hang the dog.
If you have to resort to either of these tactics to get a dog to release then you are a piss poor trainer.

I EXPECT to cop to be a cop and intervene just as if the cop was beating his child.
Or a human officer.
Yes we would be in jail asap. The LE that break the law need to be treated as would the general public.
As bad as kicking a dog is, is it really national news?
Yes it is, many people do not understand that a K9 dog is an officer of the law. Maybe people may get it into their thick skulls the K9's can't be abused. We have many dog lovers in this country who are going to be very angry over this & they darn well should be. This is a cop & he should have known better! This was his partner who would have given his life for that dog kicking cop. I hope the cop goes to jail for awhile & sees some of the very people he put there. Maybe he can get kicked around too. We probably put ex cops in protective custody though. If I can go to jail for abusing my animals a cop or ex cop needs to get the same..
I’ve had my dogs trained by a guy who is certified to train police dogs, and I’m pretty sure he would a) validate that there is no training reason to do what we see in the video, and b) would likely kick the guys a$$ and then let loose the dogs of war on the cop.
> I wonder if the Dog Whisperer ( Cesar Millan ) uses the helicopter technique?
He might use it on officer Jones if he ever caught him doing it to a dog. I certainly would.
As a dog owner, this sickens me to no end.
Why do people abuse animals like that?
I had a cop pull me over because I was driving a junker in a very nice neighborhood (I had loan my car to my son.) The cop said I swerved (which was a lie) and then got reallly rude to me. His only reason for pulling me over was I looked out of place in my own neighborhood. My wife thought he was going to beat the hell out of me.
There are some fundamental differences between training a companion dog and a patrol dog, and I would suspect that the unknowing public would probably find a lot of K9 or Schutzhund training overly aggressive and repugnant.
Having said that, it sounds as though this dipsh!t was still way over the line. He should be helicoptered and given a permanent tattoo that reads, "Not Suited For Law Enforcement."
If the dog DOES NOT learn to release than it would seem to be worthless as a police dog.
That's not in the article. It says he swung the dog in a circle (helicoptering) and suspended him from the railing by the leash. Where does it say he swung the dog in a circle by the leash?
