RALEIGH - A hearing into the firing of a state trooper accused of mistreating his police dog opened today with a video of the officer kicking the dog as it was suspended from the railing of a loading dock. The 15-second video, taken by another trooper using his cell phone, shows Sgt. Charles L. Jones kicking the dog, Ricoh, five times. The dog was tied to the railing by its leash at the time, with its front paws in the air and its rear paws touching the ground. With each kick, the dog swung about two feet under the dock.

This is what SOME Cops are like when they think they are safe in the company of other cops...

If ANY of us had even defended ourselves from this K9....we'd be charged with "assault on a police officer"...

I want to know why this prick isnt in jail for aggravated assault on a "police officer"...

Once again...no big deal to the Dept heads UNTIL the video got out to the public...

I wonder how many people this cop abused over the years and never got investigated...

FWIW, I shoot on Tuesday nights at a local match here in the Raleigh area. We had a couple of Durham LEOs there last night. One is a regular, and a canine officer.

He and the other officer both felt there was no valid reason for him to treat the dog the way he did.

I got the impression that they would in fact like some private time alone with the officer in question.

It was the surreptitious videotaping of the incident by another cop that brought this to light.

If he is married with family I wonder what kind of terror he puts the family through.

The sad part is, unless they really prosecute and get a conviction, this puke will just end up as an LEO on some local force, and get to contintue terrorizing others.

As bad as kicking a dog is, is it really national news?

“I got the impression that they would in fact like some private time alone with the officer in question.”

Thats nice, if you or I had kicked the dog we would be lucky to reach the jail without being beaten. There we would be charged with assault on a police officer.

The other posters question is valid, why isn’t he being treated as a criminal? It should be assault on a police officer or at least felony animal abuse. Instead he gets fired to find a job in another department?

Our law enforcement ranks are not lacking of scumbags. Thankfully, they tend to be more rare in our police forces than in the general populatioin.

Yes it was..but it got bounced around quite quietly before it made it to the public...

He would have only got a three day suspension...

In fact..you “defense” is just another indictment...the cop with the cell phone did NOTHING to stop it...

He is no different than those who snap photos of assaults yet do not intervene.

Quote:

Jones swung the dog in a circle in a technique known as “helicoptering.” The dog was swung in such force that it became airborne.

Herndon testified that he did not object to the helicoptering but did become concerned when Jones took Ricoh by the leash and suspended him from the railing.

“He had his back to me, and he began kicking the dog,” Herndon said. He said he did not think Jones was trying intentionally to hurt the dog, and he praised Jones’ skills as a dog trainer.

A second video shows the dog, still hanging from the railing, wagging its tail and watching Jones, who picked up the toy.

The dog appeared to remain loyal to Jones, Herndon said. “I think [Ricoh] wanted to go with [Jones],” he said.”

The FACT that herndon didnt think that swinging a dog around by the leash on the dogs neck is abuse is testimony enough to fire his ass as well.

Bad cop and stupid cop.

What a stunningly ignorant moron.

Some of the worst sociopaths have historically honed their talents on innocent animals.

This clown should be incarcerated for the duration.

Is a local NC paper considered a “national news” outlet?

Just askin’.

This SOB is no cop! He had the greatest partner he could ever have; one that would back him up without question GUARANTEED and would always lay his life on the line before anyone else on the force! He did it for no more than an atta boy and a pat on the head. By kicking his dog, the sergeant disgraced his uniform and committed a crime. He should be charged and put in the “big house” among those who know a thing or two about kicking someone.

..the cop with the cell phone did NOTHING to stop it...

Bullshit. He took action that got the cop FIRED.

Telling him to stop ends the beating temporarily. Getting him fired ends it permanently.

The FACT that herndon didnt think that swinging a dog around by the leash on the dogs neck is abuse is testimony enough to fire his ass as well.

Did he swing the dog around by the leash?
