Now that the Democrat Party leadership has started into it usual lying about Gas prices, here is a bit of useful info about just how much each state gets from ever gallon of gas. By way of comparision, the oil companies make $.10 a gallon. The Fed Govt gets about $.18 per gallon.

The only time NJ has the lowest taxes...
To: MNJohnnie
Generally speaking, the bluer the state, the higher the tax.
To: MNJohnnie
lets not forget the county taxes in each state also which vary widely....daytona beach for example is 3.63 to 3.89 a gal....in orlando it is still in the mid 3.50’s....

“the oil companies make $.10 a gallon.”
I thought the oil companies were making 10% profit. That would be more like 35 cents.

Lets make it tax free. Let everyone pay user tax on taco’s instead. Looks like the government could do a lot to help out.

Provides detail for each state:
Gasoline Tax Rates by State
EXAMPLE:
Florida:
The statewide excise tax is 14.5 cents per gallon for gasoline and 27.2 cpg for diesel.
The 14.5 cents represents 10.5 cpg sales tax plus 4 cpg excise tax. Gasoline tax rate increased .2 cpg on 1/1/05.
Tax rate changes annually based on CPI.
Does not include 2.2-cpg tax/fee for environmental inspection purposes (5 cents per barrel tax for the Water Quality Assurance Trust Fund, 80 cents per barrel for the Inland Protection Trust Fund, 2 cents per barrel for the Coastal Protection Trust Fund and 1/8 cents per gallon for weights and measures inspection fee).
Gasoline rate also does not include additional minimum 9.9 to 17.8 cent per gallon local option tax portion with the weighted average of 14.6 cents per gallon.
Therefore, depending on where you live in Florida, your overall gasoline tax can vary from an average of 52.9 cents per gallon to 45 cents per gallon.

And the states with the lower gasoline taxes look at the map and say, “Oh, we are lower than other states. We must IMPROVE our tax system.” Which is code for raise taxes on the citizens AGAIN, of course.

P.S. It is the same with cigarette makers. The state and federal government make FAR more profit on the sale on each pack of cigarettes than the makes yet the bad guy is the people making the least money.

P.P.S. I don’t buy the 10 cents a gallon story. Many oil companies pump oil out of their own wells in international waters and pay only what it costs to extract and transfer it or on federal land and pay a fixed royalty that is far less than the current spot price. Why do you think their profits are at record levels? It isn’t because their sales were up by 50%.

it should be interesting (or very predicable).

By way of comparision, the oil companies make $.10 a gallon. According to the industry itself, average oil company profit margins are 8.2%. So that would be a profit of almost 29 cents a gallon, not 10.

FL is wrong because the various 67 counties each have their own COUNTY gas taxes. These range from 1 cent to 12 cents ON TOP OF STATE AND FEDERAL TAXES.
