THE 35 BEST SHOWS ON TV--EVER
New York Post ^ | April 27, 2008 | ROBERT RORKE AND STEPHEN LYNCH

Our parents told us TV would melt our brains. While it's possible "Punky Brewster" and "A-Team" did just that, along the way we saw some genius art. Television can't play 90 minutes on the big screen and vanish into the bargain bin. And it lacks one author to take it from introduction to the final page. Yet within these boundaries, there are a small number of shows that capture our attention, our obsession, and create enduring stories. How many? 35. They're listed here.

Netflix has every Kolchak episode made, including the pilot TV movie. I (re) watched every one of them. Worth the time.

Classic WKRP quotes here:

http://tvsothertenpercent.tripod.com/wkrp/index.html

Johnny: Don’t you people get it? It’s the phone cops!!
Andy: There is no such thing as phone cops!
Johnny: Oh sure. Cover for them.

Johnny, hearing all the sirens: It’s the phone company. They know what I did here today.
Venus: What are you talking about?
Johnny: They’re coming to get me, man!
Venus: That’s paranoia, man!
Johnny: Wake up, sucker, this is the phone company we’re talking about! They see everything, they know everything, they got their own covert police force! I’m probably wired for sound right now! I gotta get out of here!
Venus: Johnny!
Johnny: Don’t use my name!!

(FYI: There ARE phone cops. I’ve met them...)

Good Grief! It took 87 posts for someone to mention Babylon 5?!?

Of course, I'd add "Laugh-in" and "Victory at Sea"...

Naked City, now there’s a show I hadn’t thought of in years.

Just watched an episode recently. Roddy McDowell was the killer, got his just rewards in the end.

Heh. OK, perhaps not...

Either Jack Lemmon or Frank Sinatra was frequently the third gorilla in the Nairobi Trio.

It is on YouTube.

I really miss it (Frasier). I liked the fact that the writers didn't dumb it down, and kept all sorts of highbrow literary and artistic references in it. I think the decline started when Niles and Daphne got together. The sexual tension prior to that was priceless.

Oh, I agree on all counts.

Also, I have especially fond memories of the Carol Burnett show, especially the "Eunice" skits. Tim Conway was a genius.

While it's not really a regular show, Hallmark Hall of Fame is a recurring series that has lasted decades, as I've enjoyed nearly all of those that I've seen.

” Adventures in Paradise (no one remembers this one?)”

I was only 7 in 1959 when this show premiered , but it definitely left an impression on me . The exotic locations ( early episodes used stock footage but I believe later ones sometimes were partially filmed in Hawaii and Tahiti ) . I recently bought some DVD-Rs from a guy - about 20 episodes . The acting isn’t the greatest , and the plots a bit dated , but still worth a view .

House (beach) band Paul Revere & the Raiders (lead singer Mark Lindsay), and the theme song of course by Freddie & the Dreamers.

Loved that show, and when my family moved to California from Montana, I felt like I was gonna be living that life (as a 4th grader no less!)

It’s so neat to meet yer baby where the action is!!!

Sesame Street makes the list, but Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Rogers don’t?!? Actually, should look at the upside - they could have included Captain Planet in the list.

Oh? I think I saw these for sale somewhere - I just remember the scenery and the leading guy and, well, yes the acting in SOME of those old series were....not nuanced.....

Glad you remember it at least.
