Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Sunday that race is not the reason he is struggling to attract working-class votes and insisted he can win over uncommitted superdelegates by showing he is "best able to not just defeat John McCain, but also lead the country."
Speaking in a broadcast interview, Obama also brushed aside a challenge from Hillary Rodham Clinton to debate before the May 6 primaries in Indiana and North Carolina. "I'm not ducking. We've had 21" debates, he said.
Trailing in delegates and the popular vote, Clinton has been stepping up the pressure on Obama for more debates before the upcoming primaries, which are crucial to her candidacy. She also has been reaching out to uncommitted Democratic superdelegates in hopes of capitalizing on her Pennsylvania primary victory.
Clinton's Pennsylvania victory was buoyed by support from working-class and white voters, but Obama dismissed the notion Sunday that race will be a factor in the presidential election.
"Is race still a factor in our society? Yes. I don't think anybody would deny that," he said on "Fox News Sunday."
"Is that going to be the determining factor in a general election? No, because I'm absolutely confident that the American people what they're looking for is somebody who can solve their problems."

“Thats true, as long as hes not the one making race a factor.”
He cannot win if he is seen as a black man running for president. He has to be seen as ‘transcending’ race. This ‘transcending’ is essential to his success. It is the mystical aspect of his campaign that sends his supporters into ectacsy. He is new. He is different. He is magic. If race is ever allowed to be openly discussed in relationship to his campaign, then the campaign becomes ordinary and no longer magic. Obama loses in that instant.
Sure, race is a powerful factor in this campaign. But it has to be an unspoken and unacknowledged component otherwise Obama is ordinary.
“Discounting race” means he is just using that as an acronym for mentioning the race card.
Just be glad that we still have our Second Amendment rights, the poor Brits are screwed when their government kicks them in the teeth and dares them to do anything about it.
What a maroon.
If ever there was a statement demonstrating an utter lack of understanding about the purpose of government and the basic economics of human action, this is it.
Yeah, Obama's definitely the man I want trying to solve my problems. What an arrogant, intrusive, egotistical airhead. You'd think with all the money he's raising, he could afford to buy a clue.
I seriously doubt well have any issues around here.
I’m 100 miles south of Chicago, and don’t expect any problems. However the mayor of Chicago does because he is calling for the Chicago police to be equipped with full automatic M4’s ASAP. Does he know something the rest of don’t?
If by some terrible mistake he wins the GE, all the average people (not the DU-type nutters who can’t beat their breasts enough over their “white guilt”) who voted for him are going to be a for a rude awakening. There’s a reason he hasn’t definitely distanced himself from “Rev” Wright and other America-hating racists. His “unity” and “hope” are ploys to soften his image, his “change” is real enough, but what that change really is, will surprise many.
IT BETTER NOT BE BECAUSE HES BLACK YOU INBRED REDNECKS.
Oh, it’s not because he is black, it is because he is a black racist muslim out to destroy America.
He’s not black. He’s half black. He’s just as white as he is black. I am so tired of him being called “black,” although, I guess that is his chosen ID.
I think some people will vote FOR him because he’s “black.” I think some will vote AGAINST him because he’s “black.”
What I wonder is, which group is larger?
In the Wallace interview this morning he was asked to cite instances where he agreed with Republicans. I thought his answers were pretty lame and disingenuous.
On capital gains he said that he wanted to raise the capital gains rate to what it was under Ronald Reagan. Then a little bit later he said changes in the capital gains rate wouldn’t affect people’s 401k. Huh?????
Sounds more like something for show. He’ll use the ‘requirement’ for full-auto as an argument for justifying futher gun bans. ‘See, our poor police have to have full-auto’s to counter the increased firepower of the average dope selling private individuals.’
Glad you’re well out of harms way. “Life is good, out of the hood.”
I’m reminded of a conversation shortly following Clinton’s election in ‘92.
I ran into an engineer I knew. The first thing out of her mouth was “Have you heard what Clinton did? He just cancelled our pay raises.” I responded: “At least you didn’t vote for him.” and she responded: “But I did.” I was flabergasted that an engineer working in defense would vote for a democrat so I asked: “Why?” She said: “Well, I wanted change.” I responded: “Looks like you got it.” At least she said: “That’s the last time I’ll vote democrat.”
I think his fingers were off the played race card.
Can’t take it back.
It is a very sad state of affairs indeed that must make us consider this. I am extremely glad I don't live in Denver...
Sounds more like something for show. Hell use the requirement for full-auto as an argument for justifying futher gun bans.
He is just getting set up for the police state, which Chicago is already. Daley doesn’t want the blacks to have guns in Chicago. They threaten his longevity as mayor.
