Most politicians have been swept up by the notion the U.S. could supply a good portion of its energy needs from Midwest farms, instead of from unfriendly regimes in the Middle East and elsewhere. In December, Congress overwhelmingly passed, and President Bush signed, a new energy bill dramatically raising renewable fuel mandates.
But that consensus will be open to debate in the presidential election with John McCain as the GOP standard bearer. He’s one of the few politicians who oppose handouts to the ethanol industry.

Actually, he didn’t support ethanol before he supported it and now he doesn’t support it again. The flip before the flop, from CNN.com October 2006:

In the however many weeks have passed since McWhacked was nominated by the Leftist Media and crossover Demonkat voters, this is the very first time I have seen one reason to vote for the can’t-be-trusted-turd.

McCain's chief economic adviser - and perhaps his closest political friend - is the ultimate pure play in free market faith, former Texas Senator Phil Gramm. If McCain follows Gramm's counsel, and most of his current positions are vintage Gramm indeed, his policies as president would represent not just a sharp departure from the Bush years, but an assault on government growth that Republicans have boasted about, but failed to achieve, for decades.
I am fully aware of the many negatives that McCain carries with him, but he does have positives. He's a mixed bag when all is said and done. He'll be about as conservative as Bush. Not my preference, but the best option we've got at this time. I wish people would stop bitching like a bunch of girls about what's going on at the top. Do something to reconsititute conservatism at the local level. The presidential campaign is what it is, we lost. Get over it and do something positive.
I support the plan as well and I am one of the evil ethanol supporters on the board. The price of gasoline is high enough that ethanol should be cheaper. I believe the price the Chicago Board of Trade is quoting per gallon of Ethanol is around $2.37

It would appear that either AP/CNN or IBD quoted him incorrectly.
Been on a cross country trip for about 10 days and fortunately have only seen one gas station marketing ethanol after I left my home state of SD. I was pleased to see so little use. That will help when the ethanol facilities cut back or go bust, but at 3.50 a gallon for fuel, maybe it is viable even without the subsidies. We shall see.
They may not be promoting it, but here in Rockford, IL nearly one-third the stations carry ethanol, and some carry biodiesel. Brands include Phillips 66, Shell, BP and Road Ranger (big local brand that used to carry Citgo).
Refueled at a station in Paducah, KY just short of southern IL, no ethanol. It was a BP. BP was a big ethanol seller in SD, but they left the state on 31 Mar 08 ostensibly because they were not making enough money.
There is an E85 station in Paducah, Ky. on Cairo road.I do agree that E85 is not ideal for those who are driving cross country and don’t want to wander far from the highway, you have to know where the staions are...kind of like where diesel was a few years ago.

Ethanol plants are refineries! I support ethanol 100% but I sometimes wish that it would go away so all of you naysayers could choke on the increased gasoline prices.
Now that will surely resonate with millions of rural and farm people, LOL!

Refineries should be defined as cracking crude oil (petroleum) into usable products. Mixing ethenol with petro-products is not part of the refinery process. It has led to ridiculous regional gas-blends which are phony and expensive. While you cheerleads are going nuts over ethanol, we are all in fact choking on the unintended consequence of increased food costs - and that has exponentially helped screw up the overall economy.
Ethanol is only an example of how powerful a lobby can be in Washington.
No the quote is correct and has been widely reported. McCain has flipflopped on the issue. He was against subsidies before 2006, then was for them for awhile in 2006, then against them last year and this.
BTW, McCain is also on record opposing the public funding of campaigns. Not that that’s stopping him from taking public money to run for President. He, like most politicians, speaks out of both side of his mouth.
