Free Republic Candidate Makeover Time! Fashion Tips for John McCain and the Others
AP/Reuters | April 23, 2008 | Cinnamon Girl

Johnny can't wear white shirts-- I get it. That is unfortunate because the white shirt with the black suit and BLACK tie is HOT right now:

But taking a cue from fashion expert Nicolas Sarkozy, even pastels will work with the black ensemble:

I actually think Sarkozy started wearing pastels in deference to John Sidney, who I'm sure he hopes will win the election.

Dark suits = HOT. Pale ties on Johnny = NOT hot

This tie ends up looking fleshy colored and yukky even though it is a nice tie. He needs to stick with dark ties so he doesn't get washed out.

Here he's doing the sport coat, tieless casual look. David Dreier can pull something like this off, but on McCain it looks like retired-grampa-at-family-dinner.

This is a great picture even though the outfit isn't great because you can see McCain's warmth and desire to be close to other people, which is sweet and which voters needs to see WAY more of. Plus this is a quilting group and I think quilting is neat.

This outfit is fine. Blue horizontal stripes has been the "it" tie during this whole campaign season.

Thumbs way down on this ensemble. The Europeans are right on with the stark contrasts right now. John's suit looks too busy and mushy.

Yaaarggghhhh.

Red tie on Obama, good. Red tie on Johnny, not good. Bumblebee suit on Hillary? Even better with horizontal black stripes.

A friend of mine who is a former democrat and current member of the CA teacher's union(!) is bothered that John Sidney's suits don't appear to fit him well. I reminded her that his arms are broken and when he moves them his suit bunches up, but she argued that the McCains have enough money to get his suits better tailored to accomodate his arms. Also, I think his shirt should be tailored better so his cuffs show when his elbows are bent. Where are his cuffs? I imagine these things have already been addressed, but I'm just putting it out there.

The best dresser at the moment. You don't see Obama in a washed out grey gabardini-looking suit. Regarding Hillary:

The hair and makeup have been looking better, the suits still look cheap.

I don't care how much this jacket cost, the fabric and the cut says "off the rack at Macy's." Keep doing what you're doing, Hillary.

Meanwhile President Bush continues to be a winning dresser. Dark suits, white shirts, cuffs showing with cufflinks. It's all good.

Still, it's amazing to think that a 71 year old short balding guy with broken arms is about to cream the dems in the election.

Is it possible that McCain wears short sleeve shirts ? hence no cuffs.

Declasse.

Perhaps, but eminently practical if you have issues with arm movement.

Obama did look conservatively dressed last night although not exactly ‘stylish’ while he listed the problems of the world as ‘terrorism, global warming, poverty and....’.

So regardless of what he is wearing, Obama is not going to be a winning candidate because he puts terrorism on the same priority status as world poverty and the weather.

Except that he does the jacket off rolled up shirt sleeves thing when he’s shmoozing with the people. That is good, but that means no short sleeve shirts.

I wonder if McCain’s hair would look better if the sides were cropped a little closer, more of a military hair cut, but not a high and tight. What is your opinion?

If youth is what's important, I guess we can all vote for Obama.

You're right. We'd be much better off with that young, good-looking Obama in the White House. We could change the name of the country to the United States of Benetton and be done with it. /Extreme Sarcasm

I think McCain’s white hair is good and bad — it’s a good color but unless he dresses just right he looks washed out. You’re right, a bright tie with a simple pattern makes him look best.

But I’ll vote for him for other reasons. He was not my first choice but I think he’s probably got the most responsible outlook on national security and the war.

I would be happy enough if he just quits winking . If that is a result of his mistreatment by the enemy , I apologize in advance .

Interesting thought, but it’s probably bulking up on the sides because he’s doing a comb over. Normally I’m down on the comb-over but since his hair is pale it works out okay.

Refreshing take on the campaign this year. Obama is always nattily dressed, but whatever, I like a grandpa at a family reunion a whole lot more than a sharply dressed black racist.

You are right, President Bush is always lookin’ good. Even at the ranch.

Goodness, I have an 'off the rack at Macy's' suit that looks better than that! (alright, so I also have the advantage of being young and slender and in love with pinstripes) Admittedly, I did have to try on five different pairs of pants and three different blazers to find the size and cut that worked the best, but it's really not that hard!

I think he should color his hair like Reagan. Start off with a little grey, then a little darker, then eventually, go a nice, realistic looking brownish. Ease into a color change so it isn't so drastic and shocking.

McCain is typical of former military men. I don't know many who are good dressers. They spent their fashion-formative years in uniform so they don't know what looks best on them and they don't care. They learned to get ahead without doing it on looks or clothes. Kind of endearing when you think about it.

Obama dresses like the elite Harvard trained lawyer that he is. He's a great looking man.

Hillary is all over the place. She has some beautiful clothes but some are just eyesores, like the bumblebee blazer and that hideous blue jacket she wore last night. I do like her jewelry lately though. She dresses like a classy upper-middle-class matron.

Your comment about Hill's bumblebee suit was right on, although it would look better on Obummer.
