According to the Tax Foundation, in 2008, Americans will work 74 days to afford their federal taxes and 39 more days to pay state and local taxes. Meanwhile, buying food requires 35 days of work, clothing 13 days, and housing 60 days.
Unfortunately, the numbers dont lie; government in the United States continues to be a fixture in the budget of the American taxpayer.
In 1900, Tax Freedom day was January 22; roughly 5% of a persons gross income went towards taxes. Today, the average person will contribute approximately 30% of their gross income towards taxes at the state, federal, and local level.
Today, April 23 is Tax Freedom day. Americans should take notice.
Taxpayers will have a reason to celebrate today, no candles required.
That's because it's Tax Freedom Day, which is so dubbed by an annual study of the nonprofit, conservative-leaning Tax Foundation in Washington. It marks the day when Americans, in terms of taxes, have earned enough in the year to pay taxes for the year. For the rest of the year, the wages are solely for the worker.
In 2008, Americans on average will work 113 days just to pay for taxes. The noted day was three days later last year.

The Tax Foundation - America Celebrates Tax Freedom Day®
The Tax Foundation needs to do a bit more math, not just on income taxes — when you figure ALL THE TAXATION we suffer, many of us pay MORE THAN 50% OF WHAT WE EARN into taxation coffers of all kinds.
Yes, and some people (liberal socialists) don’t think we pay enough in tax...of course, they see taxation as a method of “population control” by a big socialist government. Of course the liberals have worked hard to keep THEIR PRIMARY VOTING BASE paying hardly any tax at all (get the picture?)
So sit down, and do YOUR math. Detail EVERY tax you pay, and you will get sick. Sick of confiscatory taxation. Think about that next time you vote as well.
Politicians and bureaucrats everywhere are appalled. It's a shame that every American doesn't get to enjoy the privilege of working 365 days every year (366 in a leap year) just to pay their taxes. /s
How about Government Freedom Day?
Combine all the taxes, including the taxes that corporations add to the cost of doing business on their products and services which their customers pay, the cost of government regulations, and the increased cost to replace items we can no longer buy such as one-flush toilets and soon to be incandescent light bulbs and we might have enough "free" time to grab a cup of coffee.
Not to cause a row here, but these kind of statistics prove the old saw, “Numbers don’t lie, but...” Anyway, the fact that in 1900 it took only until Jan. 22 to stop paying tax is one of those worthless ideas that helps no one. Ask yourself, would you rather be in the economy of 1900 or today? My grandfather (1892 - 1975) used to note that they had nearly nothing while growing up on a farm in Nebraska. Don’t know of one old timer who would rather have those days back even though they could be content. My guess is your current 50% leftover is roughly 100 times what they had. And, I am not a liberal tax-loving socialist.
So, which is more productive: Complain about every buried tax using meaningless statistics, or use the same effort to go out and make a little more?
Great! I just got an IRS letter today saying I’m getting audited. So much for my “Tax Freedom Day.”
God help you. I’ll say a prayer for you. been there, done that.
Here in Minnesota, Freedom Day is actually April 27th.
