CHICAGO — A gust of wind blew a 2-year-old in a stroller into Lake Michigan, where the boy remained submerged for at least 15 minutes before being pulled out unconscious but alive.

The child's grandfather, who had been pushing the stroller on the lakeside Friday afternoon, jumped into the harbor to try to save the boy, the Chicago Fire Department said.

Witnesses said the frantic grandfather struggled in the frigid water, just off a 70-foot long pier, pointing a few feet away and shouting, "Child! Child!"

"He was just moaning in the breakwater, crying," said

Boy blown into lake ‘doing better’
15-MINUTE ORDEAL | Grandmother voices cautious hope

April 21, 2008Recommend (39)

BY MAUREEN O’DONNELL modonnell@suntimes.com
There are signs of improvement for a baby whose stroller blew into Belmont Harbor, submerging him until his rescue, his grandmother said Sunday.

The 2-year-old boy, Lazar, “is doing better — brain, liver and kidneys,’’ said Draga Bojanovic. “Everybody’s happy.”

I’ve been waiting for this to go up (I respond a lot, but haven’t started a thread). I can’t imagine it.

In water that cold, and a child that young, it’s actually quite likely that the boy will suffer no permanent ill effects. It’s called the mammalian dive reflex.

About 20 years ago a young boy fell into the icy waters of the Red River in Fargo, ND; he was there for 15-20 minutes survived and recovered nicely.

I did not know the name, but I did know there were examples particularly with young children surviving in similar accidents and coming back to normal. So even before I found the article I knew there could be a good result.

I see this older man in his sixties with a small child all the time along the lakefront. I always figured he was Greek or maybe Palestinian. I don’t know if these are the same two people in the story, but I have never seen anyone else with the little boy- even on the weekends. I’ve never seen the little boy walk on his own either.

This story just haunted me.
I could think of little else all day.
I have prayed a lot for this family.
Sounds like others have prayed as well.
I would love to see God come through for this family.
