This was diving me NUTS!!! An MSNBC report just came on which reported on some nitroglycerene being found in a home in Margate, FL. I live not far from Margate and don't expect everyone to be familiar with it. However, the MSNBC reporter delivering the report referred to that town at least 5 times as "Mar-got." I mean, you don't have to know about Margate to read its name and pronounce it as "Margate."
"Gate." How tough is that to say when you read it? Instead the MSNBC reporter kept calling it "Mar-got." Drove me NUTS! Oh, and she never did get the correct pronunciation. I mean we're not talking about some exotic foreign name here.

Anybody else out there catch this report? I would love to post a video link to it if it comes online. If you find it, please post it in this thread so everyone can be amazed at the stupidity level of this MSNBC reporter.

I NEVER heard of anybody pronouncing it as Mar-GOT. BTW, no more Margate Flea Market. Closed down last April. I miss the INCREDIBLE fruit and vegetable section they had there. And the sugar cane juice!

“Reporters” (professional teleprompter readers), are pretty much idiots. I think we just have to accept that.

Yeah. That’s the one. Complete torn down and resodded with grass. Now just a large field. So far only used for a couple of tacky carnivals. Hey, weren’t those fruits and vegetables the BEST! Large variety plus lots of exotic veggies. It was there that I learned to appreciate sugar cane juice.

It is ridiculous.
It's not like she was trying to say MACKINAC ISLAND, Michigan....which is pronounced [Mackinaw].

I use to live right across the street from that flea market. You slept on a cot in Lox Haven? (That placed moved too.)

How do you read “...gate” and have it come out “...got?”

The lovely Greta Wodele on C-SPAN has pronounced Ocala as “OAK a la” more than a couple of times. She has also called Hattiesburg, Miss. HATEYS burg.
She gets a beauty pass from me.
