Vanity- does anybody have a friend or family member with hyperparathyroid disease?
April 18, 2008

So my endocrinologist called earlier today, after I had left to go out to eat with my parents. He said he got the latest results back from a blood test, and my calcium was very high. I don't know if he ordered another test from when I had blood drawn last week.

I checked out about high calcium, and I got this website.

The wiki seems interesting:

An overactive parathyroid

They’re tiny glands, and it seems like there are 4 in the neck.

That website is probably the best you will find. Dr. Norman makes a lot of sense.

I don’t know much about that but I have had other endocrine problems which were not pleasant, to say the least.

My father had it, apparently for many years.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say you should probably check with your doctor and see what course of action he suggest you take rather than anything you might find on the web.

Each person is different so let the doctor who knows you give you advise.

What was life like for him during the time he had it, and what was it like post-op?

I plan on doing that.

But since he’s in on Monday and I don’t have a way to contact him right now, I wanted to check out what might be the problem online, so we can have a nice conversation come Monday.

A blood test will determine whether your thyroid is hyper/hypo and allow your physician to determine the required medication to moderate. If that doesn’t work, there are other options, most of which are fairly common

I already have an underactive thyroid gland. This is the parathyroid I’m referring to.

The parathyroid? Is that in the basement next to the board stretcher?

He was a wound tight (always druming his fingers or tapping toes...) workaholic with eleven children. He hit the ground running every morning to support the family he loved. He ate like a horse and only weighed 145 pounds at 5'10" until he was in his sixties. I'm not sure how he came about being diagnosed but there was no surgery. He was on some? medication to control it. He did become somewhat more laidback but with his type A personality it was tough for him to retire. By the time he died from CHF at 83 he had ballooned to a bit over 200 pounds.

The longer he has been gone the more we miss him...

I’m sorry, I missed the difference there. He had hyperthyroid.

I checked out about high calcium, and I got this website.

So the doctor didn't actually tell you that you have hyperparathyroidism? According to wrongdiagnosis, there are at least 33 causes for high blood calcium.

Is that the place in Tampa? I know there’s a pretty well known center specifically designed to treat parathyroid problems and do the surgery in the most non-invasive way and it’s located in Tampa.

I’ve done some research into the subject because my calcium levels have been high on occasion, but they always seem to resolve.
