Maher to Apologize for Calling Pope a 'Nazi' By Melanie Hunter-Omar CNSNews.com Senior Editor April 17, 2008

(CNSNews.com) - Liberal talk show host Bill Maher, whose controversial comments about the pope drew fire from the Catholic community, is planning to apologize Friday night for falsely accusing Pope Benedict XVI of being a Nazi, the Catholic League announced Thursday.

Catholic League President Bill Donohue received a phone call Thursday from an HBO executive regarding comments Maher made last Friday on HBO's "Real Time With Bill Maher."

As Cybercast News Service previously reported, Donohue said Maher "lied when he said the Pope 'used to be a Nazi.' Like all young men in Germany at the time, he was conscripted into a German Youth organization (from which he fled as soon as he could). Every responsible Jewish leader has acknowledged this reality and has never sought to brand the Pope a Nazi. That job falls to Maher."

Apparently HBO agreed with Donohue's assessment. "Apparently, now Maher does as well. Ergo, the apology," Donohue said.

So will the Catholic League accept Maher's apology?

"Assuming it comes across as genuine, the answer is yes. But I hasten to add that what we would really like to see is for Maher to stop with his hateful diatribes against the Catholic Church. So this is a start, but it hardly puts to rest our concerns," said Donohue.

"After all, there are plenty of factually accurate things Maher could say about other groups that would insult its members, but he chooses not to go there. Perhaps he can add Catholics and the Catholic Church to that protected list as well," he added.

Maher knew what he was saying. The closest I can come to as a comparison is Maher wants to be the modern day Don Rickles. Rickles is funny, Maher is just an ahole. That's Maher’s whole act. It seems his motto is that if you can't be talented or insightful, at least be as controversial as you can.

Many haven't learned that the worst thing they can do to Maher is ignore him like one does with a kid who throws tantrums. I do.

The only reason we don't cancel HBO is that we get it for free.

Bill Maher also said recently that Catholics are schizophrenic for believing that in communion they are “drinking the blood of a 2000-year-old space god.”

The only language that comes close is down-home Southern English. Back in college, some Jewish friends of mine steered me towards Leo Rosten’s “The Joys of Yiddish.” It was great! Not long afterwards, I saw a book in a bookstore that had a title that said something like “How to Curse in Yiddish” (this was some 33 years ago). I bought it, and laughed until my sides hurt! Wonderful invectives to use against against a tormentor or enemy!

Skinheads?

Basically neo-Nazis. They're white supremacists, they beat up people they don't like (but run if you fight back), they even have their own music. I've heard it, pretty vile, full of racial hatred. Most are just "disaffected youths" sucked in by the movement, but there are some smart people in charge.

Could be but I bet there is something. He is full of sarcasm and always directed towards some form of establishment. Seems he is very angry and when he speaks he is very bitter. You would think he would be happy with his own success over the years but...there is something else nagging at him which causes him to be in the attack mode all at once. Poor man...he should seek help.

I’m sure the apology will be less than genuine.

Agreed. When I think of a smug, self-righteous, shallow lefty, Maher is the first guy who comes to mind. He is incapable of an apology, since he knows for sure he is never wrong and his motives are pure....

It’s not like anything that Maher was saying isn’t true on some level.

Levels of truth?

Mahr will probably say something like: "I am sorry if people interpreted my words wrong and were offended...."

He'll probably do that, which is sad on more than the obvious level. The South Park guys insult people far worse than this on a weekly basis, but they never apologize. Their principle is that there is no line you can't cross in comedy, and to suddenly say there's such a line would by hypocritical. Maher doesn't have that principle, so he'll make a half-baked apology.

Yes, levels of truth, with respect to humor.

A joke is a joke, and it doesn’t need to be 100% true to be funny. It may only be 10% true and be funny, or 90% true and not funny.

As for Maher, his jokes are just not funny at any level.

Rosten's book is a classic.

There are a number of websites up now, like De gantze megillah ("the straight dope") - not to be confused with The Straight Dope, which has merits all its own.

I sent an email to the jerk that runs HBO then canceled my subscription to it.....I was a subscriber for pretty close to ten years.....
Maher is a real ahole and so is most of the stuff on HBO..
The fact that guys like Maher succeed in the media is because the people who view it are dumbed down retards....

God help this country, our whole system of ethics is breakin’ down!!!!

I can’t stand him. He’s always bashing Christians too. His hate speech isn’t just directed at Catholics. They should fire him.

Not if you know anything about Maher. He is the consummate anti-Christ. His diatribes against Christians are second to none. It's seriously troublesome to think a man like that could get a pass the way he has over the years. How anyone could single out a group like he does in this day and age, and get away with it completely, is beyond me. It certainly speaks volumes about what is going on in our society today.
