DELTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- Hundreds of workers streamed out of a General Motors Corp. assembly plant that makes crossover vehicles on Thursday, threatening the automaker's ability to build one of its most popular products.
United Auto Workers members at the plant in Delta Township walked off their jobs just after a 10 a.m. deadline passed. The factory near Lansing makes the Buick Enclave, Saturn Outlook and GMC Acadia crossover vehicles that are selling well for GM.
The strike is the first against GM over a local contract since a lengthy walkout in Flint back in 1998, said GM spokesman Dan Flores.
UAW Local 602 official Harold Brown handed out "UAW on Strike" signs from the trunk of his car as workers left the plant. He reminded them to go to the union hall to leave telephone numbers and sign up for picket duty.
Tim Berry, 50, of Holt, one of the 2-year-old plant's 3,400 hourly workers, said the strike was justified.
"Since we've been out here, we haven't really had a local agreement," the 32-year GM quality control worker said.

These people might loose their jobs when the plant is permanently shut down - but I guess that’s too much to think about ...
Good grief! Why not just play russian roulette? It gets you there quicker.
Beautiful turn of events.. Train and Replace all Union Workers.. in that Plant.. and DARE OTHER PLANT workers to walk out.. in other locations..
I’ll take a 40% pay cut for the first 6 months if they get me a temporary place to stay, and train me.
And I won’t join a union.
What a quote. Is the reporter sure he just “reminded” the other workers or threaten them to do as they are told.
GM doesn't need to worry about their customer for the new Cross-over vehicles, Toyota, Nissan, etc... will pickup the slack.
Yep, the world economy is going to hell in a hand basket and these yahoos go on strike. Gots to choose your battles (and your timing).
Who ever came up with that meaningless name crossover???
LoL.. Me too.. Where is the genious executive that can figure THIS OUT.,..
Somehow I don’t think I’ll feel too sorry for UAW workers when this plant chains the gates and moves to Mexico.
Not to mention that Nissan just released the new Murano and Rogue, plus the Infiniti EX35...
Hope they like NO jobs and NO pay with NO contract in a downturn economy.
Something about...
Stuck on Stupid.
I wonder if the UAW workers ever wonder why the new foreign auto plants are being built in the south and they are all kicking the chit out of American auto makers.
“stuck on stupid” Bwahahahahaha. That is good and to the point.
The actual crossover is more meaningless than the name. I still can’t stand those ugly “crossover SUV’s.” If the SUV is not truck based, I’m not interested.
What isn't 30+ $$ an hour enough in this economic downturn?
What isn't free or very low cost health care for life incentive enough to work? Isn't special pricing on new vehicle for life enough?
The non-domestic automakers are probably just high fiving each other with news like this.
The UAW excels at being stupid and doing it at the wrong times.
its for soft people that did not like how rough trucks where and wanted their behinds cuddled inside some pumped up car/van
It’s the intelligent thing to do.
Darwin Award!
