The Senate moved yesterday toward asking the Justice Department for a criminal investigation of a $10 million legislative earmark whose provisions were mysteriously altered after Congress gave final approval to a huge 2005 highway funding bill.

The sad thing is that if they had put it in the bill, it would have passed, and nobody would have had any idea it was in there.

I guess once you realise that, it seems such a trivial thing to illegally CHANGE the bill after it passed.

The real problem is the earmarks. This is just what appears a clearly obviously illegal extension of the already unethical practice.

“mysteriously altered” means congress never read the wording and didn’t like what they signed in the end.

Sort of reminds me of how Pelosi cut off the voting early and recounted the votes on the bill blocking subsidies to illegal immigrants, and changed some of them from yes votes to no votes in order to assure its defeat.

Maybe Pelosi and whoever changed this bill can be given a jail cell together.

Invesitgation is warranted so all in Congress can see how it was done.

It was Rep. Don Young (Rep, AK). I think Ted Stevens (Rep, AK) did the bridge to nowhere. We need to take out all the porkers up there (including plenty of Dems like Murtha and Byrd). We should also ask Pelosi et al. when William Jefferson (Dem, LA) is going to be brought to justice. (not holding breath)

Not true. The legislation was actually altered after it had been completely voted on. This was one man--Don Young--playing king by creating new legislation all by himself. He should get kicked out of Congress and go to jail for that.

Did the House pass on reading the final version of the bill before voting? There’s supposed to be checks in the House to make sure the final version can’t be altered.

Good!
Send them ALL to Jail. Anyone who snuck in multiple earmarks into ANY bill. If its all of them, so be it. But start with Bridge to Nowhere, Don Young.

Then after Young, get Henry Waxman - just for 'Being Ugly In Public'. That puke scares little children. He could star in Horror Movies and wouldn't even need any makeup.

No, in this case the bill had passed both houses, and the ten million dollar, exit ramp/interchange, for a friend of Don Young, was added. This is no difference than altering the numbers on a check. It is an illegal act and someone need to go to the big house. Maybe water boarding the friend of Young's would be a good place to start.

They should go to jail over this and, Elected officials should also be prohibited from receiving any monies from government after they leave office. No Pensions No benefits.

I'm sick of the Unethical but not illegal excuses.

“mysteriously altered” because what both Houses passed was an "earmark" to widen I-75. What the president signed was the "altered" version where widening I-75 was changed to adding a specific interchange.

Earmarks must be outlawed!

So when shall we expect to see similar actions taken against Murtha on his long term thief projects.

“What the president signed was the “altered” version where widening I-75 was changed to adding a specific interchange.”

Fox News expanded on that a little. Apparently a certain Alaskan modified it after accepting a free junket from somebody with land that will increase in value if that interchange is widened. They didn’t come right out and say he did it, but that was the assumption.
