Actually, all of Maine sucks these days but Farmington is quite a ways upstate from Portland. The University of Southern Maine is located in South Portland.

I think we take the wrong tack in dealing with the flag burners. If they want to desecrate the US Flag, fine. Applying the principles of deconstructionism, we can throw it right back at them and desecrate this:

or maybe this:

Best of all:

Did you know the UN even has a flag code?

http://www.un.org/depts/dhl/maplib/docs/stsgb132.pdf

It says that "The flag shall not be subjected to any indignity" and that "The flag of the United Nations shall not be subordinated to any other flag".

I think I feel my artistic side finally coming to life.

art was done by people like L.S. lowry, michelangelo, van vogh etc
they had a special talent and we admire that talent even today
Now those works were art

Lying a flag on the floor and standing on it is not art but attention seeking provocative action

The school is clearly not teaching art in it;s proper form nor is it teaching students what is right and what is wrong.

Obviously this provost who was mocking the vet has never served his country but mocks those who have risked their lives

Well here’s to the vet, you and others like you are really welcome to live here in northern florida, we look at after our vets, you are treated with respect and many weekend there is something which honours you and we have many vets due to the second biggest navel port on the east coast, plus airmen etc

That made me so mad I could spit.

My dad served his life under that "piece of cloth" and was buried under it.

I am nearly shaking with anger. That veteran, BLESS HIS WARRIOR SOUL, did his best.

Then I see that those mental defectives, wearing clown pants with stupid signs taped to them saying things like "future teacher" have the unmitigated gall to stand there on that flag.

I am calling those people tomorrow. They are going to get a piece of my mind.

I’m doing pretty well here in NW Illinois, though there were times this winter that Florida was calling me!

I call BS.

She can say whatever she wants, but she is no conservative. Not even if she is prostituting herself and whatever scraps of principle she may have had to get a better grade, she is no conservative.

And only a veteran like John Kerry and his ilk would condone this. By condoning this, her father has shown where his sympathies lie. Boy, does this piss me off.

I agree. I can’t say if she is fooling herself or just telling the media a story they would like. I have never met a conservative who could do something like this. If she is a RINO I would like to tell her to Get Out of My Party!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why should he lose his life savings, freedom and be harrassed more than he is? Where are the others on the conservative side of the fence. Who would defend him in this leftist hellhole? Where are the strong opinionated coservatives? Why wernt more called in to protest?

Here is what I sent to Mr. Kalikow along with the previously posted picture of my father being buried at Arlington:

*************************************

This is the “piece of cloth” my father spent his life in the service of and was buried under. It sits on my desk beside me, and I see it every single day.

I am disgusted, shocked and dismayed that you, a supposedly responsible person, would allow and condone this activity.

You will undoubtedly say that you disagree with this exhibit by Crane, but that it is her First Amendment right to do as she pleases. With rights come responsibilities, but I don’t expect you to grasp that concept.

You should be ashamed for allowing this to go on, and to allow that veteran to have to witness that. If this is what passes for education which is expected to produce your “future teachers” like the immature self-centered adolescent standing on that flag, you should resign immediately. It is no wonder that our schools produce low quality graduates when the teachers employed by them are asked to participate (or choose to participate of their own free will) in “education” like this.

Too many people (apparently including much of your student body and faculty as well as yourself) think that manipulation, titillation or confrontation is art. Where is the consideration for decency? For you and those like you, decency and civility are obviously secondary (and distantly so) to practicing your hateful interpretation of your First Amendment rights.

I have spent time outside Walter Reed Hospital, counter-protesting the Code Pink members who chose that site to practice their “First Amendment Rights” in front of a hospital full of grievously wounded men. I have had the opportunity to speak with them, and the pain in their faces was as plain and every bit as familiar as the pain I saw in the face of the courageous veteran who showed up at your “art exhibit” and was subjected to that anger, degradation, and humiliation.

Shame on you. And you should be ashamed, as should everyone who allowed, supported, and condoned this.

THe worst that would have happened is that he would have been charged with disturbing the peace. No way that his life savings would be in jeopady.

MOreover, he stood to become the patriot “Rosa Parks,” a symbol of fed up Americans who are offended by this nonsense and who will not allow tax-funded public institutions to subsidize these disgusting displays.

I’m sure donations for his defense would have come rolling in, and he would again have a chance to stand up and fight for what is right like he did so many years ago.

Exactly. Well put.

Conservatives understand that PRINCIPLES, and the SYMBOLS that define those principles are as deserving of respect and decent treatment as the principles themselves.

To liberals, everything (expecially words and principles) are malleable and subject to change and interpretation. There are no absolutes, and everything is relative. They worship the god of moral relativity.

You know, I dont buy that anymore. I have watched lots of committed conservatives bite dust when they stand up on their own. There is no sense of conservative community that will step in for you, that will get on the cell phone and speed dial in reinforcments. It just isnt.

Yep, my family goes back to when Maine was still a part of Massachusetts. I miss it, occasionally. But then I read articles like this and find that it ain't what it used to be. Too many folks from away up there, now.

I've been a Damn Yankee in the south for going on 15 years now. It's nice. Mostly because when it snows here, we all just stay home for a day or two until it melts.

I commented to the little girl at our neighbor's house (she's 11 or 12, I'd guess) that "When I was her age, I used to make money shovelling people's driveways." She gave me the most innocent look and said "Why would you shovel it? It just goes away?!"

It was at that point that I knew I'd found a good place to live. :-)

I had never seen that. I was 10 years old at the time and grew up in a family that wasn’t much into sports.

You and me both! I'm from Maine also. I would never move back there. My family's been in Maine for over 100 years. I go to visit occasionally, but that's the extent of it for the same reasons you state. Up until I made the mistake of moving to Washington state in '06, I had lived down South for over 15 years also. I can't wait to get back to Florida next year and keep my sorry butt there this time!! ;~P

Now see...THAT is an excellent idea for a constructive counterattack.

I’m dead serious. Is there anyone here who is connected with the college Republicans of this school who could float that idea?
