A Living Lie (Thomas Sowell)
Jewish World Review ^ | April 15, 2008 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 04/14/2008 7:49:05 PM PDT by jazusamo

An e-mail from a reader said that, while Hillary Clinton tells lies, Barack Obama is himself a lie. That is becoming painfully apparent with each new revelation of how drastically his carefully crafted image this election year contrasts with what he has actually been saying and doing for many years.

Senator Obama's election year image is that of a man who can bring the country together, overcoming differences of party or race, as well as solving our international problems by talking with Iran and other countries with which we are at odds, and performing other miscellaneous miracles as needed.

There is, of course, not a speck of evidence that Obama has ever transcended party differences in the United States Senate. Voting records analyzed by the National Journal show him to be the farthest left of anyone in the Senate. Nor has he sponsored any significant bipartisan legislation — nor any other significant legislation, for that matter.

Senator Obama is all talk — glib talk, exciting talk, confident talk, but still just talk.

Some of his recent talk in San Francisco has stirred up controversy because it revealed yet another blatant contradiction between Barack Obama's public image and his reality.

Speaking privately to supporters in heavily left-liberal San Francisco, Obama let down his hair and described working class people in Pennsylvania as so "bitter" that they "cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them."

Like so much that Obama has said and done over the years, this is standard stuff on the far left, where guns and religion are regarded as signs of psychological dysfunction — and where opinions different from those of the left are ascribed to emotions ("bitter" in this case), rather than to arguments that need to be answered...

Sowell is just an Uncle Tom to all of Obama’s mentors.

Put Shelby Steele on that ticket at the top and you’d have a conservative winner.

Sodium cyanide, when looked at for what it is instead of what it does, is remarkably dull. Sowell wrote another gem.

You’re probably right but think of the education BO has and stack him against Dr. Sowell. It wouldn’t even begin to be a contest, it’s like BO dropped out of school in the 5th grade. LOL!

BO is right. He stinks to high heaven. Too bad “our” nominee is a lemon, just not quite as bitter.

Barry Osama is a Marxist and perhaps a Leninist as well.

If you’re fartrher out then the Klintoons, who are totalitarians at heart, then you’re REALLY dangerous.

There was a group of angry people in 1776 who turned to guns and religion.
It turned out pretty good.

I will ruffle a few feathers here by stating that perhaps the ONLY Republican candidate who could stand a chance of beating him in November is none other than John McCain. None of the others - NOT ONE - stood a Chinaman’s chance of pulling enough votes from the mushy middle to win the election versus Obama.

I have been thinking the same thing. I guess the Dem's strategy of driving a wedge to split off the conservative hard liners may have backfired on them.

Another gem from Sowell. For those who don't know, he was short-listed for a Cabinet post (Treasury, I believe) under Reagan and withdrew due to blood pressure.

He was also a Marxist when he was very young, and his book on the topic was one of my primers. I'd recommend it strongly - he explains the topic patiently and methodically and refrains from criticism until the last chapter. Brilliant work.

And he knows the topic well:

Fabian socialist George Bernard Shaw included the working class among the "detestable" people who "have no right to live." He added: "I should despair if I did not know that they will all die presently, and that there is no need on earth why they should be replaced by people like themselves."

Marxism is, after all, intensely elitist. From its very inception it was a remedy for a problem that solved itself, recommended for a class of people that rose from illiteracy and immiseration, by another class of people who wanted nothing more than a skim from the top and fame for having been clever enough to fool the crowd. That would be Lenin's "cadre" and every politician on the Left has been aspiring to membership since it was first identified.

And they do aspire. We have, between Hillary (Yale), Obama (Harvard), and his wife (Princeton) three Ivy Leaguers convinced that far from being privileged, they succeeded through a struggle against a continuum of racism and sexism and hence are the proper leaders for the rest of us, whose benefit from Whiteness and the Patriarchy has somehow failed to produce Ivy League sheepskins on our walls. These folks absolutely believe this. If their contempt and disdain is returned to them doubled it isn't really anyone's fault but their own.

Interesting post, thanks. I didn’t know he was short listed and I don’t blame him for withdrawing for health reasons. There’s been many people speak of his not wanting to be involved in politics and his aversion to travel and of course now his age. I personally feel he did the right thing even though our country would surely have benefited from his brilliant mind.

Agreed, and that’s a good way of putting it.

Dr. Sowell was spot on in saying he joined the radical, anti-western left but he’s smooth enough with his lies that he’s actually appealing to some who don’t subscribe to that.

He truly is dangerous.

“I believe he’s about to go down. He’s on the defensive trying to explain his downside and it isn’t working.”

Up until now I had to turn away from the tv whenever Hillary’s image came up - hopefully before I could hear her grating voice.

That changed this week.
I am enjoying watching her smugly drink beer and whiskey with Pennsylvanians.
She’s actually managed to eloquently pinpoint the specific problems with Obama’s words.

Today’s coverage of Obama showed an angry, bitter, defensive man who seemingly doesn’t “get it” that Hillary is no longer in the hot seat. He cannot fathom how he wound up in the hot seat.

It certainly has not been boring watching these liberals self destruct.

Now - if only McCain would quit talking about the economy like a clueless liberal - I would be in a fantastic mood.

I don't think Hillary could have picked a more effective opponent for herself.

At this point, I don't she can win the nomination, and keep the peace, both figuratively within the Party, and literally, without at least publicly offering B. Hussein the VP slot. She'll need his supports, both the "Community" and the Limousine Liberals who now support him.

But.. I think the die has been cast already, it's just not a mathematical certainty. He will get the majority of the regular delegates and of the popular vote, although in both cases the margins may be very slim. The only way she could get it then would be through a mass movement of the super delegates to her side. That's not likely to happen. Can you imagine Fat Teddy, or Jimmah Carter, rallying to Hillary?

OTOH, B. Hussein could be assassinated, ostensibly by a Right Wing Militia Nutcase, and Her Heinousness would slide into both the nomination and likely the White House on the "anti Evil Right Wing Conspiracy" tide.

I love how you pulled out my favorite quote from this story, too:
“In politics, the clearer a statement is, the more certain it is to be followed by a “clarification,” when people react adversely to what was plainly said.”

You are far too optimistic about SnObama or Hitlery’s chances this fall. Did you see the new Marist poll that shows McCain is even or even leading(!) both of them in NYState, of all places?

So smart! So clear! How do we end up with such stupid politicians when there are people in the world like Thomas Sowell?
