Pelosi: ‘President’s Failed Economic Plan Has Stiffed the American People’

Releases Contact: Brendan Daly/Nadeam Elshami 202-226-7616 For Immediate Release 04/14/2008 Pelosi: ‘President’s Failed Economic Plan Has Stiffed the American People’

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi responded this afternoon to President Bush’s comments at the White House this morning. Below are her remarks:

“This morning, once again, President Bush demonstrated how out of touch he is with the concerns of America’s working families. Many people in our country are afraid or concerned about losing their jobs and/or losing their homes. But almost everybody in our country is concerned about losing their living standard. As the cost of groceries, gasoline, heath care, education, and other necessities continue to rise, purchasing power of middle-income families has stagnated or has gone down.

“The President’s response to that economic insecurity, as he once again said this morning, is to make permanent tax cuts to the wealthiest people in America. That is one of the President’s top priorities—those tax cuts to the wealthy.

“Another priority is a war without end in Iraq, one that has driven us into debt, into recession, and has diminished the capability of our military to fight the real war on terrorism in Afghanistan, and to fight any threats to our security, wherever they may occur.

“The President’s third priority is the Free Trade Agreement with Colombia. As I have told the President before, Democrats stand ready to work with him to bring the Colombia Free Trade Agreement to the floor, but the timing has to be the timing of America’s working families, not the timing of the President of the United States, who seems oblivious to their economic insecurity.

“We’ve worked with the President before on the stimulus package, on passing the Peru Free Trade Agreement earlier in this term of Congress, and we believe it is possible to bring the Colombia Free Trade Agreement to the floor under the proper circumstance. But first, we need to address the worsening economy in our country.

“This morning, the President claimed that Democrats in Congress had stiffed a crucial ally by putting off consideration of the Colombia Free Trade Agreement. Yet, for seven long years, the President’s failed economic plan has stiffed the American people.

“As we proceed with the Colombia Free Trade Agreement, we are putting the concerns of America’s working families first, but we are also concerned about the relationship with Colombia and I have extended a hand of friendship again to the Ambassador, and sent my good wishes to the President of Colombia.

“This has to be done in recognition not only of the concerns we have about human rights violations of workers in Colombia, but based on the economic security of America’s workers here in our country. We ask the President to once again bring his people to the table so we can move forward.”

I’d like MiZZZZZZ Pelosi to explain how taxing “the wealthy” more helps out anyone else.

No, it was Bill Clinton who stiffed the American people. At least those who'd hold still long enough.

Took the new Dem Congress about a year to get the economic supports sawed away.

And the RNC can't even hit this slow, hanging curveball out of the park...

Let me see if I get this straight. She of so few brain cells wants millions of illegal aliens to continue laboring on the cheap without regard for the devastating effect such outrageous, misplaced loyalty to foreign nations has on our own citizens.

FOR FIFTY OR MORE YEARS, Congress has driven us mad with their inane policymaking. Now, an equally soiled-hands lackluster "leader" wants to blame GWB for our economic ills?

My gawd! It's all I can do to read the news some days. By the way, no one wants the amnesty-loving GWB gone more than, and he can take all hiw liberal buds with him. Only a new force of conservative leadership can save us. I pray McCain does the right thing and chooses a genuine leader as vp.

Regards . . . Penny

Nancy, Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty has driven us into debt for decades and has shown no hope of achieving it's goals. Yet you the only complaining you do about that is to complain we aren't throwing enough money at it.

What a hypocrite.

If the Dems gain control of the branches of government, this country will really see what a failed economic policy will look like.

purchasing power of middle-income families has stagnated or has gone down.

Sure, let's compare apples to apples here. The 'average' middle class family now has five phone lines, a half million dollar home, three cars, well over 400 media channels.. During the Clinton administration, a similar setup would have been far, far more expensive. So the purchasing power has gone up.

As for health care costs - failed liberal policies continue to bite us; extra requirements on health plans, a lack, still, of tort reform, artificial inflation of prescription prices by government setting a 'floor' price, vs say Walmart which offers $5 prescriptions on many generics in most of the United States. Oh, and the ever popular illegal aliens crowding out people from the low cost clinics and emergency rooms which those without insurance used to depend upon.

Education costs? Slash and burn through the multimillion dollar salaries of college administrators, eliminate unnecessary but politically correct departments and chairs, and eliminate the $90 vanity textbooks and those costs would fall dramatically.

I wonder, Nancy Pantsi, what's your solution? More government regulation, more 'openness', more taxes? If the middle-income Americans are squeezed, then does this mean you're going to start supporting the continuation of tax cuts?

Right, right, I forget, the problem continues to be that Americans have too much money and liberal ideology is still not taught in enough places, therefore more money has to be confiscated. Any comment, Nancy Pantsi, over how Congress, while you've been in office, has increased their spending for staff and benefits by five hundred percent?

Let's see. The last time this was for a 4yr term was 1976 - 1980, correct? I have such fond memories of those times.

And 1992 - 1994 wasn't too bad. Of course the Dems had all three branches and raised the gas tax and social security tax, but the brain dead public won't remember and the Republicans sure won't use that against them.

I think 1992-1994 will also be remembered as the last time there were Democrats that voted on the side of America instead of just for the Party. They vote pretty much as a monolithic block now according to what that idiot Pelosi is spewing as garbage of the day.

A year ago January the price of gas was 25% lower and the economy was good. Unemploment was below 5%. Then you and the Democrats took over. Nancy this is YOUR economy.

This Democrat congress addressed baseball and lightbulbs.
The important matters of social security, medicare and energy are beyond Pelosi and her dimwitted, self serving fellow Democrats.
