Free Republic Beta Update: New Mail Features & Font
Posted on 04/14/2008 9:57:23 AM PDT by John Robinson
Updated the beta site today. I've added the following new features to the mail system:
- Favorites folder-- you can mark messages as favorites. Favorites are saved into a folder that can be accessed through the "Favorites" tab on the mail interface.
- Search! You can search for messages from people, and you can search for text within messages sent to you.
- and a few miscellaneous changes.
I'm also experimenting with format changes on the index pages.

While you’re working on fonts, any chance the index page can get an option for a sans-serif font like Arial?
The behavior of site_search_extended mode is a little weird. The menu can have one setting, but if the text box already contains a title: or do: qualifier, it is not handled correctly. Also, the asterisk in the text input box gets in the way when entering a search query.
For what it’s worth, webkit.org has some excellent new HTML/JavaScript diagnostic tools for Windows and Mac. There is a new web page inspector with multiple viewing modes, a new error console, and a new JavaScript debugger app called Drosera which allows breakpoints, single-stepping and variable inspection. The WebKit browser is the open-source counterpart to Apple’s Safari web browser.

so people like TomGuy can revert back to it using a css extension on firefox?
You mis-read.
I do NOT use Firefox for FR.
I DO use an IE-based tabbed browser called Fastbrowser.
FYI
Your suggestion, however, may be of use to those who do use Firefox for FR browsing.

Thanks, John.
There seems to be a bug on the profile page. When I follow the account link to the profile and edit the profile page, return brings me to the editor page, not back to the forum. Sorry for the extra headache.

Staring at the white background is like staring at a light bulb. It hurts. Have you tried adjusting the brightness on your monitor?

Thanks for all your hard work, John. FR is such a treasure!
Is there any way to set preferences to show only the title of the latest posts page - without the content? If posts include graphics, it takes forever to load for those of us still in the dinosaur age with dial-up.

Hmmmph! I liked the old days when you had to send in a deck of punch cards with your comment and got back a half ream of fanfold paper showing what everyone else said.
Priceless! LOL

Please, can we have the old time format back? I hate military time (nothing against the military, just hate converting)
