Another ethnic slur has reared its ugly head from the golf world, and once again, it's from a golf announcer. Bobby Clampett, a former pro and CBS announcer, referred to Chinese golfer Wen-Chong Liang as "the Chinaman," on the air on Friday.
Clampett issued an apology, albeit a rather weak one, on the air: "It has been a privilege to be here with you the last two days describing action of the players. In describing the Asian player Wen-Chong Liang if I offended anybody please accept my sincere apolgies."
These are sensitive times in the golf world. Golf is trying hard to join the 21st Century and be part of he the diverse world, but there are times the old world, too often the Old South, shows up at the microphone. The Golf Channel's Kelly Tilghman was suspended two weeks in January for saying that the Tour's young players who want to challenge Tiger Woods should "lynch him in a back alley."
I am bi-racial just like candidate obama, but I do not understand the world that he is coming from./Just Asking - seoul62.........
Ok, Im a fan. The hype doesnt bother me. :)
That's fine, and I get that. But I'm a golf fan. And when CBS goes all-Tiger, all the time--at the expense of the other golf being played--it just kills me as a golf fan.
Tiger has hinted a few times that he'll retire at 40. I'm quickly beginning to hope that it can't come soon enough.
Would “Chinaman” still be a racial slur if it was used to describe a Caucasian or black who lived in China?
You sound like my Father, may he rest in peace. Are you of the same age bracket? He always said to me that I was a wuss and skin-thinned when it came to those matters. The question I will pose to you is if you had adopted for instance a child from China, and someone ignorant person called her a chink, what would you do?/Just Asking - seoul62......
If a commentator uses a term like that, I have no problem with the management telling him afterwards that Chinese folks prefer another term these days, but to throw a hissy fit over it and demand an apology is just another example of the Orwellian nonsense that permeates our society.
The Japanese word “gaijin” was a derogatory term toward foreigners, and it still gets used, but whites generally don't freak out over it. I've even referred to myself as a “gaijin” before when talking with Japanese friends.
I don't have any problem with referring to any ethnic group by the name they prefer. But when those names change, it's a little excessive to freak out and crucify anyone who slips up and uses the old name innocently.
It was “kinda funny” to hear Bruce Lee even call himself a chinaman in old interviews. I guess it is like the N word, only okay if the group in question uses the word.
I am surprised you didn’t call us “typical white people.”
Sorry, but using your logic it should be:
China-man = a man of Chinese origin
Ireland-man = a man of Irish origin
France-man = a man of French origin
Finally, for many who lived through the condescension by whites in China, “Chinaman” and “Oriental” were ways of describing people who were considered sub-human. My parents told me about the signs in the foreign legations which read, “No dogs or Chinamen allowed” or lavatories the were clearly labelled “No Orientals” in Shanghai no matter what status (academic or professional) one had.
Asians have long memories; the Sino-Japanese War is discussed among Chinese as if it happened yesterday. After the stories of Japan’s Unit 731 came out, it’s hard to blame them.
Or peckerwoods
“I refer myself as an American of Irish and Japanese ancestry.”
I like that. I really do.
Maybe on the Irish side we are related.
Would not upset me at all. I am from an urban area, I am college educated, call me whatever you want.
lol thats pretty funny.
Ut’s OK for you to say “Call me whatever you like” That’s different from “I can call anyone whatever I like”.
We also heard a lot about the South African. There must be somebody out there that thinks that is a slur.
Thank goodness PC does not exist in Panama...Spanish or in English...except among the American tourists who forget they are not in the U.S.
This does not excuse foul language, which is not acceptable in either culture. There is a difference.
The thing that confused me the most was that the Africa man who won doesn’t look at all like our
Africa-America man -er- men.
As a Polack with a last name ending in -ski I heard many comments from people when I was growing up. My response was, "It's a good thing I don't value your opinion." (I said that many times as a kid when criticized or teased about various things) I found that by not to reacting other people's comments, they would lose interest and move on to someone they could get to react in the manner they wanted.
My husband tells me the same thing all the time: ignore, move on. He states that I am an over-bearing drama queen, but then I can contribute it to hormones./Just Asking - seoul62......
Ref post # 76.
Hey, I just thought of something As an American born in Panama which by Panamanian law I am also a Panamanian, that makes me half spick!!!!
I love it!!!
My two brothers and my sister we are all half spicks!!!
I love it!!!
Another thing, as I am thinking about it, when I go to the States, I will be referring to myself as half American and half spick because I am.
I can hardly wait to see the expression on all those PC faces!!!
Since I will be in the States, I really should refer to myself as half gringa and half spick.
How is that?
(Im on a roll.)
