France calls for "international force" against maritime piracy
TOKYO - France calls for the creation of an "international force" under a UN mandate to combat acts of piracy at sea, such as the diversion of Ponant by Somalis, said Saturday french Prime Minister Francois Fillon you! a visit to Japan.
"We are going to ask that under UN mandate an international force, to which France is naturally ready to participate, to work towards the safety and security of maritime transport in the region, as in the Malacca Strait," said M . Fillon in a speech before the French Japan, on the french warship "Mistral", with a stopover in Tokyo.
Jean-David Levitte, the diplomatic adviser of Nicolas Sarkozy told the press Friday that the french president proposed an "international effort" to combat piracy at sea, without specifying that it was the introduction of a strength.
Mr. Fillon also indicated that the commando operation against french Somali pirates once came ashore after payment of the sum of money claimed, "has helped recover half of the ransom.
Sources close the dossier had reported Friday the recovery of a portion of the ransom paid by the owner of the three towers.
The crew of the sailboat Ponant, who was on board a warship french, is expected soon to Djibouti, from where it returns to France by plane.
He would do better to work for a multi-lateral force of like-minded nations, rather than the UN. There are countries in the UN that will want to protect the pirates, and will do everything they can to make sure that any UN force would be ineffective.
In Islam, piracy is perfectly acceptable and the pirates are the good guys.
So IMHO, piracy, particularly the incident with the somalia pirates is just another aspect of extremist islamic terrorism. It should be handled as simply another aspect of the war on terror.
If the French can assist in rallying the international community to commit resources to the overall war on terror, then I have no issue with expanding the war to encompass piracy.
However I fail to see the need to invest US resources any further than they are being stretched, otherwise. The other nations interested in peace need to do more. Our brave allies are already in the fight, we need more nations interested in peace to commit resources.
One guess what nation would bear the burden of this.
The UN? Is he out of his mind??
Piracy calls for swift and determined action to project lethal force and kill the criminals on the high seas.
The UN can do nothing of the sort.
Man up and join us, Mr. President.
US Navy's been spanking these terrorist hoodlums for years.
Calling Horatio Hornblower!!
Issat right.
Well, anyway, the people that worry me the most are the ones that don't know, and they don't know that they don't know.
Are you following me?
Strange thing. Our media hasn’t told us the ethnicity and “religion” of the pirates.
The French have a big enough navy to coordinate with the Somalian/Ethiopian grounds forces to take out these “pirates”. Why waste time going to the UN other than to just talk and claim your doing something about the problem.
Sink anything that leaves the shoreline of that African pesthole for a generation. Repeat as necessary.
I wonder if the Navy has any of the predators. If those could be operated from carriers, could they shadow our ships? When something like those Iranian speed boats showed up, they could swing in unnoticed right behind them. The video could probably be patched to the ship. Any hint of monkey business and it would be hellfire time. Having a recording of the hostile act would be priceless.
Voiceover on the tape.
“This was the Iranian boat ignoring the order to standoff. This is a closeup of the Iranian picking up the rocket launcher. This is the result of the impact of the Hellfire.”
“Any questions from the press?”
Earth to France. When someone attacks your citizens, don’t try to set up an international force. Go kill the ragheads yourselves. Grow a pair, you boobs!
International Piracy, International Terrorism, Islam.
I don’t see any difference between them. They are all the same thing.
Besides, nothing is as neutered, ineffectual and corrupt as the U.N.
We need to start by booting the U.N. from our shores.
The French did use troops against the pirates this week. They caught six of them and got back most of the money paid as ransom as the pirates landed.
I think that the next step would be to shell the villages where the pirates sail from.
Agreed, the only thing the UN could do is bore them to death with endless debates and worthless resolutions. In the end, some pirate sympathizing country would simply veto any action.
What, are the French asking for the Marines again? We already cleaned up Europe’s Mediterranean pirate mess one time, now they need us again.
We need to send them another Stephen Decatur.
If only we had another Stephen Decatur.
