Stanley Kamel, who played Adrian Monk’s long-suffering psychiatrist on the TV detective show “Monk,” died Tuesday. He was 65.
Kamel was found dead of a heart attack in his Hollywood Hills home by his agents, publicist Cynthia Snyder said.
Kamel, born on Jan. 1, 1943, in New Brunswick, N.J., had a nearly four-decade acting career, much of it on television.
For several years, he portrayed Dr. Charles Kroger on the USA Network series “Monk.” As Kroger, he dispensed advice during weekly therapy sessions to Monk (Tony Shalhoub), a brilliant but neurotic private detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

I agree about Bitty. She was outstanding.
Since my daughter had a baby 2 weeks ago, and I've been helping her, I discovered that 'Monk' is on at 9:00, 4:00.5:00, and sometimes 1:00 AM.
His character will be a real loss to the show...

"Major Doug Keller is a Monk fan currently stationed overseas in the desert town of Balad, Iraq. Early in December he had the chance to meet Traylor Howard (Natalie).
'We had a USO Show and Traylor Howard showed up for us when the other actress couldn't make it,' writes Doug. "She was awesome. What a great person. I can not wait to get back home so I can watch tv again."
Remember the garbage strike episode when Monk mailed his garbage to Dr. Kroger?....

I’ll third that. IMHO the chemistry between the two characters was outstanding. Before she left, it was a great show. Now it’s merely a good one.
We all have these quirks...It's really funny when you think of it...but it makes "You"..."You".
I haven't watched Monk recently [it got too politically correct for me], but one of the problems with Bitty Schram's character [assuming Bitty Schram would even want to continue the role] was that there was so much sexual tension between her and Monk that it threatened to overshadow Monk's ostensible obsession with his dead wife.
Eventually Bitty Schram would have had to have become Monk's second wife, and Hollywood just wouldn't allow an outcome like that [leading men getting married off and settling down and making babies...].
I wonder how the writers will handle it.

How ironic that tonight’s episode is Mr. Monk Gets a New Shrink. From the imdb: Plot Outline: Dr. Kroger questions his abilities after a patient becomes the prime suspect in a murder. He decides to retire but a distressed Monk is convinced someone else is responsible.
There was not an once of sexual tension between Sharona and Monk. That’s what made the episode about them pretending to be married a hoot. Also there was a running gag in the episodes about Sharona being attracted to dishonest losers.
It was really a loss to the series when Sharona got booted. I used to say it was the only series where the women were characters and not just adornments.

It would have killed the show. The basis of the character is Monk's neurosis and grief. Undercut those and the whole character becomes less interesting, and that's a totally character-driven show. I can usually figure out the mystery and how Monk is going to solve it within the first five minutes. They only serve as a backdrop for his character.
I never once had that thought...
