Sean Connery: A new day for independence
Star Tribune ^ | 04/10/2008 | Sean Connery

Posted on 04/11/2008 7:06:24 AM PDT by Tatze

Scots, who helped inspire such an ideal in the first place, are debating whether to reach for it again.

There are few more-cherished American ideals than independence. With the recent celebration of Tartan Day, established as April 6 by a U.S. Senate resolution in 1998 to commemorate one of the inspirations for the Declaration of Independence -- Scotland's Declaration of Arbroath -- it is as good a time as any to tell the uniquely Scottish story of independence.

In 1320, Scots penned the Declaration of Arbroath. In lines that would echo through the ages, they wrote, "It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honors that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."

Many Americans are familiar with that part of the story -- of the patriot William Wallace and the Scots who stood up for independence. What is understandably less familiar is that in 1707 a group of Scottish noblemen sold Scotland's independence and joined with England to become the United Kingdom of Great Britain.

If Sean Connery wants to make the case for independence it better be in service to life or liberty. Likewise, when the Dali Lama reveals himself as an avowed marxist, his case for independence should fall on deaf ears.

A long winded reply with your real comment buried at the end. Whether or not the Dali Lama is a marxist or not, Tibet was a free and sovereign nation , until overrun by the communist Chinese(I guess you forgot they are also marxists, or more properly, maoists)by force of arms, and deserves to be free once again without Chinese a**hats killing them off and taking their land and businesses.

You spout off about why we broke from England, chief among them the statement that the treatment from England had become so bad it was time to get out. Well, since Tibet was never a part of China, not a colony or territory, and was taken over simply because China wanted it, I would say all the criteria stated by our forefathers for obtaining independence has been met and Tibet needs to be armed to resist these communists dictators.

Double speak such as yours is worthy of a an Obama or Clinton.

I think it’s not so much treason as the lack of wisdom that falls on a nation when it forgets God. The good news is we’ve stopped amnesty before and we can stop it again.

According to this Wikipedia entry it's a McLean of Duart hunting tartan. His mother was a McLean. And here's the kicker...the guy who may have inspired the James Bond novels...was a McLean. Couldn't be any more perfect. Info at the link.

Scotland will become richer if they get to keep the oil.

How black gold was hijacked: North sea oil and the betrayal of Scotland
In The Independent, 9 December 2005, Ben Russell and Paul Kelbie wrote about the betrayal of Scotland.

http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/this_britain/article331945.ece

It was a document that could have changed the course of Scottish history. Nineteen pages long, Written in an elegant, understated academic hand by the leading Scottish economist Gavin McCrone, presented to the Cabinet office in April 1975 and subsequently buried in a Westminster vault for thirty years. It revealed how North Sea oil could have made an independent Scotland as prosperous as Switzerland.

I was at language school over in Monterey. My GF at the time was working at a store in downtown Carmel.

I had just turned 18 and I was living in Monterey, life was good.

Concur 100%.

Well, since Tibet was never a part of China, not a colony or territory, and was taken over simply because China wanted it, I would say all the criteria stated by our forefathers for obtaining independence has been met and Tibet needs to be armed to resist these communists dictators.

I would also note that the treatment we received from George III, while despicable, pales in comparison to what has gone on in Tibet.

Then it was off to Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo TX. That was not as much fun, however!

Interesting in and of itself. But this line also caught my eye:

The message that Scotland is open for business came across clearly this week as Scotland dropped its business taxes to be even more internationally competitive.

They are copying Ireland, whose economy exploded into one of the best in Europe after they drastically cut taxes on business. It's good to see that some can learn, even if socialists cannot.

The big mistake was Ireland’s breaking away. Together, the British Isles were strong. In fragments, they loose.

Depends on your perspective. Together was really good for England, they got a worldwide empire. Wasn't working out so well for Ireland, which was poor as dirt under the benevolent social practices of the English, who considered the Irish about one step above a dog in the hierarchy of creatures .... actually more likely one step below. They've done pretty well since they shook the Brits loose.

He wrote it himself. What makes you doubt that he is educated sufficiently to compose such a piece?

Yeah, I was wondering what Ireland and Scotland ever got out of the deal. Anyway, socialist England is close to irrelevant and these Scottish tax moves will just cement that trend.

Yes Molly T, it is treason, and worse. They figure all are the same, and will sit in their high villas and eat caviar, extend their lives off the “underclass’ by harvesting them, and believe that their money will buy them security in the new age of Chinese Global Domination.
