Sean Connery: A new day for independence
Star Tribune ^ | 04/10/2008 | Sean Connery

Posted on 04/11/2008 7:06:24 AM PDT by Tatze

Scots, who helped inspire such an ideal in the first place, are debating whether to reach for it again.

There are few more-cherished American ideals than independence. With the recent celebration of Tartan Day, established as April 6 by a U.S. Senate resolution in 1998 to commemorate one of the inspirations for the Declaration of Independence -- Scotland's Declaration of Arbroath -- it is as good a time as any to tell the uniquely Scottish story of independence.

In 1320, Scots penned the Declaration of Arbroath. In lines that would echo through the ages, they wrote, "It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honors that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."

Many Americans are familiar with that part of the story -- of the patriot William Wallace and the Scots who stood up for independence. What is understandably less familiar is that in 1707 a group of Scottish noblemen sold Scotland's independence and joined with England to become the United Kingdom of Great Britain.

Interesting in and of itself. But this line also caught my eye:
The message that Scotland is open for business came across clearly this week as Scotland dropped its business taxes to be even more internationally competitive.

Here, the libs are attempting to raise taxes even more on businesses, while other countries are lowering or eliminating corporate taxes to lure business to them. And we wonder why so many American companies are moving off shore.

How do we have so many economical morons in this country voting to put more economical morons into positions of power? Nevermind. I already know.

I don't know how to answer your question, because it's so telling. YOU ARE SO RIGHT. Americans just don't pay attention to anything else that the "product" now being sold as news.

We've GOT to stop listening to hype and pay attention. The short-sighted, self-centered existence of the typical American has GOT to stop!

Maybe ...some commericals like that Pepsi WAKE UP PEOPLE one, with short messages that make sense to any level of comprehension.

Unless of course we are talking about Tibet. The US doesn't think Tibet should be free and independent as they were before the Chinese decided to become their lord and master.

I agree with Sir Connery.

Scotland should become independent immediately. England will immediately become both a great deal richer and much more Conservative.

Scottish independence at this point in history is nuttiness.

Note that the independence movement has for years been promoted by the Scottish Nationalist Party, now dominant, which has fascistic and anti-semitic roots. They are not a conservative party.

There are also Welsh nationalists.

The big mistake was Ireland’s breaking away. Together, the British Isles were strong. In fragments, they loose.

The old declaration quoted in this article had some reason behind it, because then the Scots were fighting against a dictatorial monarchy. That is not the case today.

;-)

Try playing this little game...count how many times you hear or read the words, COULD, MAY, MIGHT, POSSIBLY, SOURCES SAY, IT'S BEEN REPORTED, etc. that you hear in the MSM news or in newspapers....it's remarkable.

These are all words of speculation...NOT FACT.

This is the hype that has now become news. It's no longer fact, but rather a "product" being sold to us these days.

Connery has for many years been one of Scotland’s biggest proponents, and a smart cookie. I imagine he wrote it himself.

Note also that the article blames a “group of Scottish noblemen” for having given up on Scottish independence. One cannot be blamed for smelling some Marxism in that explanation.

The story is much more complicated. There are religious, and even linguistic components in the history. Check it out! The last big attempt at “independence” was actually a civil war between the more primitive highlanders (Catholic and many speaking Scots Gaellic, a Celtic language) and the lowlanders, who were mostly Protestant, English-speaking, literate, and modernized — and progressing very swiftly economically and even in intellectual fields. The more English spread, and the better the roads, the more closely Scotland was linked to England, and the more successful was the united country.

To slap a border in there now would be crazy. Of course, it may happen. Fortunately, the border won’t get rid of English, and it won’t stop ideas. It may make it harder for workers to find jobs, and it may hurt the economy. Let’s hope that all the residents enjoy the game the nutty nationalists are playing.
