Race may be issue in council vote

A recent influx of black residents in Metro Councilwoman Martha Jane Tassin’s district could complicate her re-election bid this fall. When Tassin — a white Republican — was re-elected in 2004, black voters outnumbered white voters by about 500. Today, voter registration records show that there are some 3,530 more black voters than white voters in District 6.

Some black leaders such as Councilman Ulysses “Bones” Addison are already targeting Tassin, claiming her district should be represented by an African-American.

“It’s nothing personal against Mrs. Tassin, she’s a fine lady. But that seat should be held by a person of color to help create more balance on the council,” Addison said.

The U.S. Census Bureau estimated that in 2006, African Americans accounted for about 46 percent of East Baton Rouge Parish’s total population.

But Addison noted that blacks hold four council seats, or 33 percent of the total 12. Electing a fifth black council member would bring that percentage up to about 42 percent, which is still less than the black population parishwide.

Despite the debate over race, Tassin remains bullish about her chances of winning another term.

“Race wasn’t a factor in the last race. I would hope that we’re past that,” Tassin said.

Tassin handily beat two black opponents in the 2004 primary, capturing 52 percent of the votes cast.

Addison said many of Tassin’s council votes aren’t in the best interests of the African Americans in her district. “A lot of the votes that she has made weren’t in the best interests of the people I represent or people who look like me,” Addison said, noting that his district is 87 percent black.

But if a white said this - it would be racism...

“It’s nothing personal against Mrs. Tassin, she’s a fine lady. But that seat should be held by a person of color to help create more balance on the council,” Addison said.

How much more personal can you get??? You are the wrong skin color...

Obama is pulling 85% to 95% of the black vote in every primary, we are far from "past that".

And Deval Patrick needs to resign as MA Governor immediately. That state is lily-White. Can’t have that now.

Obama’s a fine man, nothing against him personally, but a white country should be represented by a white President. (sarcasm)

This guy (Bones) would oppose a black Republican. He just wants another Democrat so they can get more spoils of the office.

The dirty little secret is that blacks are the biggest racists on the planet.

Oh wait, that's not quite what he said, is it?

I wouldn't paint people with a broad brush like that. Racists come in all colors, and goodhearted, decent people who see people for who they are do too.

It IS racist.

It is blatantly racist.

Shocking, really.

What votes did the incumbent make that were
In the best interest of all her constituents but those of African heritage? The reporter should have pressed him on that — it may have shed light on his true motivations.

Not voting for someone because they’re black = racism

Not voting for someone because they’re white = equalitarian

Some animals are more equal than others. :D

Facts are uncomfortable things. Just ask the white farmers in Zimbabwe (if you can find any still alive).

What facts? You've just repeated your flawed assertion that if some people of a certain group behave in a racist way, it says something about the people of the group as a whole.

Not only have you implied that African Americans are inherently racist, you've used the people of Zimbabwe, who have a completely different culture than American blacks, to try to back up your foolish post. The only thing they share is the color of their skin, which you must agree is a has no relation to this issue.

Idiocy like yours makes Free Republic look bad.
