WASHINGTON, March 14, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in a candid interview with The Washington Times Friday expressed her position on abortion as mildly pro-choice.
Asked, Are you pro-life? Are you pro-choice? What is your thought on abortion?, Rice responded: I believe if you go back to 2000, when I helped the president in the campaign, I said that I was, in effect, kind of Libertarian on this issue, and meaning by that that I have been concerned about a government role in this issue. I'm a strong proponent of parental choice, of parental notification. I'm a strong proponent of a ban on late-term abortion. These are all things that I think unite people and I think that that's where we should be. I've called myself at times mildly pro-choice.
With little prompting Rice continued, Yeah, mildly pro-choice. That's what that means. I think that there are a lot of things that we can unite around, and that's where I would tend to be. I'm very comfortable with the president's view that we have to respect and need to have a culture that respects life. This should be an issue pretty infrequently because we ought to have a culture that says that, Who wants to have an abortion? Who wants to see a daughter or a friend or, you know, a sibling go through something like that? And so I believe the president has been in exactly the right place about this, which is, we have to respect the culture of life and we have to try and bring people to have respect for it and make this as rare a circumstance as possible.
When told of the belief that in order to be elected a Republican president, a contender must be firmly pro-life, Rice responded, I'm not trying to be elected.
Rice was then pushed on abortion, with Washington Times White House correspondent Bill Sammon saying, But it sounds like you do not wish to change the laws that now allow (abortion)...
Rice responded, Well, I don't spend my entire life thinking about these issues. You know, I spend my time really thinking about the foreign policy issues. But you know that I'm a deeply religious person and so, from my point of view, these extremely difficult moral issues where we have -- where we're facing issues with technology and the prolongation of life and the fact that very, very young babies are able to survive now -- very small babies are able to survive -- these are great moral issues.
What I do think is that we should not have the federal government in a position where it is forcing its views on one side or the other. So, for instance, I've tended to agree with those who do not favor federal funding for abortion, because I believe that those who hold a strong moral view on the other side should not be forced to fund it.
Again this is a conservative site - not a Republican site. Condi is the 2nd level puppet as to GW. She should continue her piano lessons & Russian langage. Apart from that she is a zero when it comes to protecting the citizens.
And this shouldn’t cause any concern for the Bash-McCain-All-Day-Every-Thread crowd because he’s solidly pro-life... the abortion issue isn’t important to them, apparently.
I’d rather see him choose a bone-deep social conservative as a VP but I think Condi would be a decent pick.
It's in the above article! She says the President's views on abortion are in exactly the right place and that she supports his views. Sheesh.
What's your source for her having any other position?
Excuse me? What planet are you living on?
Condi Rice has stated she is "mildly" pro-choice. Since WHEN did Bush run as a "mildly pro-choice" candidate? News to me. Please feel free to cite the exact time and place he proclaimed the "exact same position" as Rice.
Bush would relutantly ALLOW (not favor) abortion in cases of rape, incest, and to save the LIFE of the mother. He does not and never has favored abortion for so-called "health reasons" of the mother. He is thus pro-life in 95% of cases and has always run as an openly pro-life candidate. Indeed, he turned out to be surprisedly more pro-life than I expected and has staunchly opposed using embroys for stem cell search.
Condi Rice supports legal abortion for most circumstances but oppose late term and partial birth-abortion. She would allow unlimited abortion is probably over 2/3rds of the cases where it came up. Thus she decribes herself as "mildly" pro-choice, because she's not as rabidly pro-abortion as the ghouls as NARAL who favor killing 9-month full developed unborn babies and abortion in every single circumstance.
I suppose in your world, Jim & Sarah Brady hold "the exact same position on gun control" as George W. Bush since they both have some common ground in saying they'd sign the assault weapons ban.
Geesh.
OK I got a deal for you:
We all lobby hard, for Duncan Hunter for VP.
If that doesn’t work, let’s go with Condi. :)
I just re-read the article. I am not confident in her views on the issue.
Meaning that she supports the three exceptions.
Condi Rice supports legal abortion for most circumstances but oppose late term and partial birth-abortion.
Citation please. Where has she ever said this?
I’m with you. I can’t stand McCain, and I feel utterly abandoned. I hate knowing that no one is going to represent me on Illegal Aliens, the reality of Global Warmongering, and half of the other things that I think are absolutely vital. But this is going to be a choice of A or B, getting only half of what I want or getting none of what I want, and sitting out is going to result in the worst case. Further, sitting out is not going to “teach anybody a lesson, by gum”. The hard truth is that we as Conservatives have failed to make our case one person at a time to other voters, and we as a party have failed to put up candidates who live up to our values. We’ve ended up with too many RINOs in power because not enough of us have gone out and done the hard work to identify and get elected real conservatives who won’t end up embarrassing us in a men’s room somewhere or worse. Subjecting the country to four or eight years of Democrats packing even more Socialists and Communists into every available corner of the government is not going to advance our cause. I seriously considered sitting out, but I think we have to be grownups and do the best that is possible, while working harder for what we know is right. Take some heart from the knowledge that we did affect some decisions during the Bush Administration for the better. If it were not for the massive pressure from us, Harriet Miers would have been on the Supreme Court before you could say “Judge Souter and his gang stole my damn house”. Only the massive pressure from us has kept the Illegal Alien issue from becoming a wholesale concession to lawlessness. We haven’t won, but we haven’t given up, either. And we have won some significant battles. This is and will remain damn hard work. We have to do it, and not sulk off to suck our thumbs in the corner.
To the point, we should be flooding, and I mean flooding, the McCain headquarters with demands for a conservative VP like Hunter, Thompson, or someone even better.
I gave a citation. What kind of idiot posts crap like this in a conservative forum? Are you a DU/HuffPo/Kos troll?
You’re a bit late.
Well I'm sure pro-abort misnamed Rev. Wright feels he's deeply religious, too. But you can be deeply religiously wrong also. Get deeper into the Scriptures pls Ms Rice.
True, but for a while here the talking points of the Condistas was that Condi Rice is "libertarian" on abortion. It was a good way to spin it, since calling her libertarian on abortion sounded sooooo much better than saying she's liberal on abortion.
Unfortunately for Condi and her supporters, libertarianism takes no stance on the morality of abortion and whether it's right or wrong (and Libertarians themselves are all over the spectrum on this issue), so saying her stance on abortion is "libertarian" makes as much sense as proclaiming I have a "capitalist" view on the death penalty.
Thankfully the "Condi for President" crowd here got awfully quiet once their gal started shilling for the Palestian cause. Unfortunately I see there's some freeper on this thread still trying to sell people on the premise that Condi's pro-abortion views are "Exactly the same" as Bush's views on abortion. < insert twilight zone music < />
Yes, see my post #31.
If you can figure some way to switch Duncan Hunter into the process - I’m with you 100%.
Otherwise, let’s get about the business of making sure the Marxists don’t win.
That would be horrible.
Yes, even more horrible than John McCain. OMG!

Washington is full of brilliant people with impressive degrees, many of whom are multi-lingual. IMO this is not what determines whether they'd be good candidates for the presidency. Just think back to the GOP primary. Obviously, the brightest candidates didn't appeal to the voters nearly as much as those of more average intelligence.
