Colleges' final frontier: mixed-gender housing Jason Carmignani hung out with his roommate, Yael Bassal, at Clark University. "We're both pretty mellow," he said. (Dominic Chavez/Globe Staff) Email|Print|Single Page| Text size + By Peter Schworm Globe Staff / April 2, 2008

In the Woodstock era, the advent of coed dorms caused a stir, with Life magazine proclaiming the development "an intimate revolution on campus." Coed floors came along over the next two decades, giving college students immediate proximity to each other. The next step, coed suites and bathrooms, brought the sexes even closer together.
Now, some colleges are crossing the final threshold, allowing men and women to share rooms. At the urging of student activists, more than 30 campuses across the country have adopted what colleges call gender-neutral rooming assignments, almost half of them within the past two years.
Once limited to such socially liberal bastions as Hampshire College, Wesleyan University, and Oberlin College, mixed-gender housing has edged into the mainstream, although only a small fraction of students have taken advantage of the new policies so far. Clark and Dartmouth universities introduced mixed-gender rooms last fall, and Brown and Brandeis announced plans last month to follow suit.

This is the wedge issue that will split Islam and the Democrats.
women need their space just like men do...
Mixed Gender!? Just what every dad wants for his 18-year old daughter away at college, an 18-year old male horn-dog.
DemoCommunism on the March!
I have no idea why anyone would send their kids to these “indoctrination centers.” This is sooooooo wrong on so many levels. But for the marxists, this is the best way to instill in the next generation that they have no rights to privacy, an opinion, or anything else, other than what “the State” wishes to give them.
This is just soooooo wrong.

“At the urging of Student Activists”. UGh. I like your comment about “space”. Read ANTHEM by Ayn Rand. “It is a sin to be alone”.
If I weren't the uneducated, ignorant and back-country, religious conservative; I'd almost think that this was a class-based ruling. I must ask my over-lords to enlighten me as to why this has the appearance of being wrong. < / sarcasm off>
Will there now be Resident Planned Parenthood Providers on every floor for emergency distribution of “morning after” pills?
At Penn they’ve been sharing bathrooms for decades. Reportedly if one person disapproves, they abandon the policy. I don’t think such dissent is tolerated by the group think.
“(1) You may not object to any assigned roommate regardless of sexual orientation, sex, color, or religion, but (2) UMass is establishing black-only, Hispanic-only, and Gay-only dorms so these poor oppressed ‘victims of white racist homophobic society’ can be protected from evil Eurocentrism. I am not making this up. Massachusetts is the U.S. with Obama as President. “
And if allowed to do it, these same little thinly disguised totalitarians would decide who you can and can’t marry, where you can live, etc., and every other aspect of your private life they think should conform to their fool notions of multiculturalism, diversity, tolerance, inclusiveness, and all the other gag words they’ve concocted.
These are some of the most narrow, bigoted and intolerant people to ever appear on this earth.

Initial therapy will include removal of all decorative soaps from all bathrooms, having no more than one shampoo and one conditioner bottle in all showers, and returning all toilet seats to the up position when exiting the bathroom.
Didn’t Pol Pot chain couples together by force?
The State will choose your domestic partner.
Slow down! The Civic Center redesign contractor has only built about half the required number of towers, has not finished the fence, and has not even begun installation of the power facility to electrify the fence. First things first!
And parents are willing to pay good money for it too. Tragic.
Ping - the look on this guy’s face is priceless...
You do realize: he ain’t lookin’ at that laptop.
I wrote in "Human" and noted on the bottom of the application that it was the 1980's and LSU should let go of Jim Crow racism.
Luckily for me the next week I was accepted to UT-Austin and lived in a co-ed off campus dorm. However, I did end up with a roommate with a strange cross dressing habit for one semester.
You must be talking about Bob Jones University, where until recently, interracial dating was prohibited.
