Hispanic Leaders Fear Patrols Will Spark Violence
KPHO-TV (Arizona) ^ | 4/2/08 | n/a

PHOENIX -- Hispanic leaders are calling for an immediate end to Sheriff Joe Arpaio's illegal immigrants' patrols, claiming they are dividing the community and could lead to violence.

"As a community, we see him going out setting up his troops and stopping people at random -- racial profiling," said Hector Yturralde, president of We Are America. "After they find out they can't speak English or they have no identification, then they stop them for immigration."

Yturralde added, "He is causing a division within this community that is not good. And that is not his job."

He said the sheriff is using his title to grandstand at taxpayers' expense.

In the past two weeks, Arpaio has conducted patrols at two Phoenix locations where day laborers gather, using some 200 deputies and posse members. Last week, more than 50 people were arrested in the area around Cave Creek and Bell Roads. More than a dozen were illegal immigrants. Arpaio has vowed to continue the operations.

Yturralde, Lydia Guzman with Respect Respecto and immigrants' activist and former state lawmaker Alfredo Gutierrez expressed concerns that Arpaio's patrols, which have drawn large groups of protesters, will end up in violence.

"We're seeing people come out of the shadows who are very angry because at some point they feel victimized," said Guzman. "And other people are coming out of maybe the other side of the shadows and saying we want something done."

Gutierrez said most "decent" people do not believe the sheriff's operations are accomplishing anything, except dividing the community.

"He chose to take this extraordinary provocative approach," Gutierrez said, adding that during last week's operation, "We were able to maintain control, but barely." He said more patrols could lead to formal resistance, i.e. civil disobedience on the streets of Phoenix.

"I think that will begin to occur at his next excursion, the next time he brings 200 or 300 people into a neighborhood to arrest people," Gutierrez said.

Guzman and Gutierrez said everyone believes that immigration reform is absolutely necessary, but it is the responsibility of Congress and the federal government.

Guzman and Gutierrez said everyone believes that immigration reform is absolutely necessary, but it is the responsibility of Congress and the federal government.

they always say that when it comes to citizens getting fed up, then when the same citizens are being taxed without representation by having to pay for the illegals: healthcare, food stamps, law enforcement, prisons, etc. not including lower wages due to illegals, then they say: “it’s a state problem to pay for this”

my question, and i never get an answer from the politicians, why is the cost “a state problem” and enforcing immigration a “federal problem”. if we taxpayers have to pay, we have a right to define who can receive our benefits (citizens and legal residents) and who can’t (illegals)

apparently they do have more rights that us citizens

there is supposed to be equal protection under the law,
if you are a citizen and you COMMIT FORGERY AND FRAUD, your
butt will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law

according to these groups and politicos who want shamnesty, we are supposed to just ignore the MILLIONS who have committed ID FRAUD AND FORGERY, meanwhile the citizen who attempts to do the same, is doing time

amazing how in this case, those judges, politicos, special interests, illegal alien supporters, ignore the constitution

if they want all the rights of the constitution without being here legally, give them ALL THE RIGHTS, LIKE THE RIGHT TO HAVE THEIR BUTT HAULED TO PRISON FOR FRAUD

and yes, i live in arizona, lived here all my life, i’m a teacher, and what i have seen the last 15 years is making me sick.

i am angry about this. sheriff joe, russell pierce and andrew thomas are the only elected officials doing squat.

if we taxpayers have to pay, we have a right to define who can receive our benefits (citizens and legal residents) and who can’t (illegals)”

If the 80% of Americans who want an end to the invasion withheld their taxes and the first one the IRS arrested another 100,000 showed up and said “arrest us too”, you get the point, but people want the problem solved without themselves needing to be inconvenienced.

If the market charged us $50.00 for a loaf of bread and $100.00 for a gallon of milk and told us to lump it, we would see immediate, united action against the market.

well, the carpetbaggers are charging us $1,000,000 for the bread and 100,000,000 for the milk , tells us too effing bad, wastes half the money and steals the other half , uses our money to support their goal of turning America into a third world nation and there is no unified action.

Stay bent over cause the govt. ain’t done with us yet.

The sad part of what your elucidating and I do happen to agree with is that when the crap finally does start hitting the fan and Americans have their backs up against the wall and attempt to defend themselves against these so called reconquista malcontents aka criminal illegal alien invaders they'll find themselves pitted against the very government that is charged with their very protection.

Sadly many of our elected politicians starting with the alleged President on down have chosen sides and it doesn't bode well for Americans I'm afraid. The day is coming before long I believe where Americans are going have rise up against an out of control and increasinhgly oppressive government. I pray that I'm wrong but I don't think that I am. God help us all.

Unless there is a STRONG reversal of the entire situation, I am talking mass deportations across the border, either forced or voluntary repatriation, I give it 3 years, maybe four, max. Particularly under a do-nothing President, who will be in Mexico’s back pocket, whom we are fully guaranteed now to have at the White House for the next four years.

“Yes, it does sound like their argument is that the sheriff should not enforce the law or the criminals might get mad.”

Good!

Let them throw some tantrums.

It’d be good from mom and pop America to see what the illegal issue is really like.

Then we bust ‘em or smoke ‘em.

I happen to believe that McAmnesty will only vastly exacerbate the situation if or should he be elected. He will be even worse than his fellow liberal contenders as he makes no bones about what he intends to do, so openly and so boldly about the uneducated unwashed hordes already here and those on the way and those still yet to come.

We'll end having to battle not only an oppresive big government but also the millions of anti-American socialist Demoncraps hell bent on our destruction as a nation.

Oh, no, we can’t have that!!! The law states the remedy for illegal entry is deportation....we must put a stop to it before these ‘family values’ aliens get angry! John McCain even said so. Let’s stop all this silliness against our trusted ‘migrants’. Give them whatever they want. They’ve already cost me one home and my families future, I’ve got one house left, let them have that too!

ABSOLUT INVASION

The MSM wouldn’t show it if they burned Phoenix to the ground.

He said more patrols could lead to formal resistance, i.e. civil disobedience on the streets of Phoenix.

That should bring out more illegals and lead to more arrests. It's working! Keep going Sheriff Joe!

Ahhhhhhh, Nooooooo..

“They” stop (the illegal aliens) for breaking our laws by being in our country illegally...

This has nothing to do with “immigration”

Who mentioned immigration ???

As a REAL immigrant, this does not effect me...

Sheriff Joe is my hero...

How unfair, especially if they are sent to the ‘tent-city’ jail. I mean, thet place is super hard to conduct gang-related crime in. Recuruiting into hispanic gangs is gonna be tough too!

I’m sure its a love/hate. Loves him because of his hispanic surname, but hates him because he is arresting illegals.
