I just quickly checked and the UK’s unemployment rate appears to be higher than America’s “depression-level” unemployment rate . . . and I’m guessing that a greater percentage of the British population is on the dole to boot . . .
"Disadvantaged Americans queue for aid in New York"
Here in AZ there are numerous Hispanic families who get food stamps via electronic swipe card. The DES (Department Of Economic Security) issues them to people if they meet the requisite criteria. I’ve seen these families at supermarkets. They don’t look like they’re starving.
When the countrywide unemployment rate hits 25%, then the eurosnobs have the right to bitch at us about a depression. Until then, STFU.

Worth repeating
Most of the people in that line don’t LOOK like Americans. They are mostly illegals, and the permanent homeless. Permanent homeless should be in gov’t sponsored mental facilities, in my opinon, and looked after.
If the past is prologue, the Dow should be 20,000 by November.
(I'm too lazy to look, but I think the US has the second lowest unemployment in the G8, after Japan.)
The gubmint ADVERTISES on radio, looking to get more people on food stamps! I hear the ads on Boston radio stations all the time.
I think the reporter is both lazy and stupid. Although it's unclear which characteristic is dominant.
Article: "They should be refilling it in the next three or four days," Liepnieks says. At times, he admits, he and friends bargain with owners of the smaller grocery shops to trade the value of their cards for cash, although it is illegal. "It can be done. I get $7 back on $10."
Sounds like this guy is using food stamps to buy liquor and/or drugs.
Article: "Last St Patrick's Day, we were selling Irish soda bread for $1.99. This year it was $2.99. Prices are just spiralling up, because of the cost of gas trucking the food into the city and because of commodity prices. People complain, but I tell them it's not my fault everything is more expensive."
In New York City, a 22 oz loaf of store brand (C-Town) white bread is $1.29. Shelf life is about a week.
Article: The US Department of Agriculture says the cost of feeding a low-income family of four has risen 6 per cent in 12 months.
In the UK, salaries are the same as American ones, but expenses are twice as high. This means rent, groceries, etc. Eating out is usually triple the cost in New York City.
Like I said, this reporter is stupid and lazy.
I am gonna guess you're joking. This looks like the Bronx, or maybe Brooklyn. It might be Harlem, but it's definitely not Wall Street.
The article’s ultimate measure of poverty is the supposed 28 million Americans that “need” foodstamps to “survive”. I don’t have the energy to dissect the various levels of disingenious in the article. Needless to say many if not most foodstamps are going to those that don’t deserve them due to dishonest declarations of poverty. There are truly some people in desperate situations that need some food stamp assistance but the vast majority of food stamps are given to people that are either purposely or ineptibly part of an ever-repeating cycle of government dependency.
I only read the first few paragraphs so I’m not sure... Did the author mention that the US population is at an all-time high, and that there might be some correlation with food stamp recipient numbers also being at an all-time high, or did he miss that part in his rush to publish?
This reporter AND his newspaper are dishonest.
They're clueless about economics so that sort of ultra-negative sentiment is a *good* thing.
No recession! Dow 20,000!
Personally, I think Matt was doing it tongue-in-cheek. The premise was so ridiculous. And as for the photo...
“Unemployable, hungover “corner boys” queue up for soup line.”
