Increasingly, it seems that the Republican Party would rather quit or simply embrace liberalism than fight for the conservatism in which they used to believe. It doesn't seem to matter how little they have left to lose. They'll find some reason or other to keep going along in the same leftward direction as the Democrats, just a tiny bit more slowly.
They would apparently rather be the Vichy Republicans, named for the puppet government of France that Nazi Germany appointed in the city of Vichy during its World War II occupation. Just as some Frenchmen sold out their country and brethren for the trappings of entirely phony “power” – as if they could really do anything of which the Nazis disapproved – so too are many Republicans more than willing to adopt and implement the policies of their erstwhile “enemy” just so they can pretend they have more influence than they really do. As if they could really pass anything of which the Democrats disapproved.

Thompson ran a campaign that never seemed to progress to more than a crawl, and I don’t remember seeing Hunter out on the campaign trail at all.
By the time Thompson got up to speed, as much as he did, McCain was mopping the floor with him and it was over.
I do not think Conservatism was pushed all that stridently this year. You may see it different.

I heard this before, but substitute "Gore" for "Hillary or Obama" and "Bush" for McCain" like this:

I voted for Bush, twice, and I regret it. McCain would be even worse, and the GOP will be out in the wilderness for another generation. He's that bad.
Oh, far, far longer than a mere generation, once a President McCain managed to snake a new and "improved" amnesty bill through a dutifully compliant Congress, and we ended up with somewhere between thirty and forty MILLION brand spanking new Dem-voters-for-life added to the roles.
That's the sort of nightmare prospect that really ought to terrify any thinking conservative(s), quite frankly!

I think McCain would wipe the GOP out of any position of federal power for a generation to come.
His compulsion to collapse to any Democratic opposition disturbs me. His primary goal is to “get along with the Democrats.” I wish he’d be just 1/2 as harsh with the Dems as he is with the conservatives in his own party. He’s a mean little sh*t...to us.

When you say GOP, I honestly think you’re referencing Conservatism. The RP will hold positions of power, it’s just that Conservatives won’t be a part of it. They will be frozen out.

You know, I had penned a response of disagreement with you, but then I realized I'm wrong: The GOP will hold offices, but they'll be as nasty to our causes as the Democrats. I really don't know where to go. I know I'm not going to hold my nose and vote for McCain. Never again.
I really wish Hillary had seen the threat of Obama and switched parties. It’d be hilarious to see all of these people here telling us that we have to support her, and how conservatism is dead and would somehow be deader if we didn’t elect her. “Pray for Hillary - Day 128.” LOL.

Ha. I think you misunderestimate the depth of loathing we have for this man. I see McCain as the end of my state. I live in Dallas, which already has the fastest growth of illegals in the country, and this man wants to give them his stamp of approval and pave the way for millions more? No. I don’t just hope he gets elected without my vote. I want to see him go down in defeat. He is the only candidate who will not cave in to the kind of pressure we brought to bear on the last amnesty bill. It’s his signature issue, and he’ll fight for it with his dying breath.

Look, it’s a tough pill to swallow for many of us who have voted for Republicans non-stop since we turned 18 or further back 21. I started voting for Republicans in 1970 and never looked back. And to be honest, some of those folks weren’t Conservative, but I didn’t know better at the time.
Watching this nation turn into a socialist state was very painful. We either take a stand at some point or watch as we turn into the U.S.S.R. As crazy as that sounds, we are seeing some incredible signs of what is to come today.
Religious freedom, First Amendment freedoms and Second Amendment freedoms are under attack. If they should be damaged futher, we’re in serous trouble. What I see in Canada tells me we’re very close to some serious problems.
