A Royal Marine who threw himself onto an exploding grenade to save the lives of his patrol has been put forward for the UK's highest military honour.
Lance Corporal Matt Croucher, 24, a reservist from Birmingham, survived because his rucksack and body armour took the force of the blast.
He was part of a reconnaissance troop in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in February, when the incident happened.
The Ministry of Defence said he could be considered for the Victoria Cross.

You’re getting better!
That’s right and I’ll go on being selfish and believing in myself. And nothing you can say or do, any ridicule of what I think , can change what I think. They are my beliefs, MY thoughts and NOTHING in the world , not you, not the government can change the way I think or what I believe.
It’s people like you who want everyone to sacrifice themselves for other and to think the same everyone else does , it’s people like you who are ruining this country with your collectivism/Socialism. There are many other collectivists and they are called liberals like Hillary Clinton who want everyone to sacrifice themselves for others and for the common good and who want others to think like they do. Seems like you are a liberal to me.
I’m not denigrating his heroism, I was the one who originally posted this story. It isn’t my fault if you comment on a story without reading it properly...

socialism/Collectivism doesn’t work. Private property (selfish for profit private property) capitalism does work.
Christ said,
“Greater love hath no man than that he lay down his life for his friend.”
Technically speaking I’m still correct, since Willy Apiata has won the New Zealand version of the VC, which has been an independent award to the British VC since 1999. Beharry is the first British soldier since the 1960s to survive an action for which he was awarded the VC...
Rest easy, mate. Your job is done.
> Technically speaking Im still correct, since Willy Apiata has won the New Zealand version of the VC, which has been an independent award to the British VC since 1999.
Technically you are still wrong. The Victoria Cross is a Commonwealth award. The NZ Victoria Cross has the same criteria as all VCs and is awarded by the Queen. As are all VCs.
Seems like you are a nut to me.
btt
Unworthy as I may be, I salute you, sir.
I hope you're not married or have kids.
If you are, you owe them at least an explaination now while they are still alive as to why you will abandon them when they need you the most.
> Im an individualist and wont give my life for anyone else.
A thoroughly self-absorbed, selfish person. Thank goodness you’re an individualist: that means there’s probably only one of you.
Hell, buy their products, too!
I see now why the world and this country is in trouble and the government keeps growing. If on a conservative forum people can’t see the difference between individualism(capitalism) and collectivism(socialism) then the world is doomed and it’s not people like me who are dooming it.

What does Ayn Rand mean when she describes selfishness as a virtue?
Answer by J. Raibley
Ayn Rand rejects altruism, the view that self-sacrifice is the moral ideal. She argues that the ultimate moral value, for each human individual, is his or her own well-being. Since selfishness (as she understands it) is serious, rational, principled concern with one’s own well-being, it turns out to be a prerequisite for the attainment of the ultimate moral value. For this reason, Rand believes that selfishness is a virtue.
In the introduction to her collection of essays on ethical philosophy, The Virtue of Selfishness (VOS), Rand writes that the “exact meaning” of selfishness is “concern with one’s own interests” (VOS, vii). In that work, Rand argues that a virtue is an action by which one secures and protects one’s rational valuesultimately, one’s life and happiness. Since a concern with one’s own interests is a character trait that, when translated into action, enables one to achieve and guard one’s own well-being, it follows that selfishness is a virtue. One must manifest a serious concern for one’s own interests if one is to lead a healthy, purposeful, fulfilling life.
It’s amazing people like you can use a computer. All you do is name call and provide no intellectual discussion, so you are on ignore.
Not big enough, Michael...not by half...
What absolute devotion to his mates.
I’m not married and don’t have any children precisely because I love my freedom, I love my privacy,I don’t want to answer to a wife, I don’t want a live-in boss ( a wife) , and i want to spend my money and my time how I see fit.
How does my living my life how I want to and my thinking affect your life? In no way whatsoever.

Speaking personally, I think people are upset with you because you chose this particular thread to air your particularly self-focused viewpoints, in the face of what is unquestionably a selfless and brave act by a British Royal Marine Commando.
> then the world is doomed and its not people like me who are dooming it.
On the contrary: people like you are a huge part of the problem.

Ayn Rand or Jesus Christ — which to pick? Ah, choices, choices, choices...

She would get along well with Satan then.

I would not like to live in a world populated by such selfish people as these. Luckily for you, there are unselfish people who will fight and die for your right to be selfish. I guess that makes them less virtuous than your fine self — a failing that they probably don’t mind having at all.
