When it comes to teachers and students, there is no such thing as consensual sex, experts said yesterday.
The power differential is too exploitative in those sexual encounters, said Charol Shakeshaft, a former Hofstra University professor who now teaches educational leadership at Virginia Commonwealth University and is an expert on sexual abuse in schools.
"It's a violation of trust and professional boundaries," Shakeshaft said of the March 20 encounter Nassau police say happened between Heather Kennedy, 25, a math teacher at Wantagh High School, and a 16-year-old boy who is a student at the school.
Kennedy was arraigned yesterday on charges of statutory rape and endangering the welfare of a child. The age of sexual consent in New York State is 17, police said.
Even if the boy wasn't in Kennedy's class, Shakeshaft said the mere fact that he attended the same school indicates "sexual exploitation and bad judgment," she said.
And when the teacher is a woman and the student is a boy, the sensationalist aspects of these liaisons are magnified, Shakeshaft said.
"I believe that females get a lot more attention [in the media] because I think it adds another dimension," she said. "People don't seem to think it's child abuse then."
It's a double standard fueled by popular perceptions of older women with younger men, according to Mike Lew, a Brookline, Mass., psychotherapist who has treated and written about survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

This so-called “expert” doesn’t even raise the issue of the most critical criterion for determining guilt or innocence.
Wow!
Sadly, something so obvious has to be discussed.
Exactly
“It’s a double standard fueled by popular perceptions of older women with younger men, according to Mike Lew, a Brookline, Mass., psychotherapist who has treated and written about survivors of childhood sexual abuse.”
Um, I doubt the teen boys who nailed their teacher’s assistant would seriously think they were victims.
In the old days, we didn’t need experts to tell us the obvious. Are we so dumbed down with publik ejukeishun that we need them now?
One of the sickest men I’ve ever known was initiated into sex via a family friend. Granted, he doesn’t think he’s twerked in the head, but the women he’s been involved with and the courts say he is.....
That doesn’t mean he’s been abused. I have a hard time equating an improper sexual relationship between student and teacher with a kid whose father sexually abuses him/her, for example. Know what I mean?
No,
we have than assinine double standard were men need sex— the younger the better and women endure sex, because I’m told we’re different (not)....so a boy who gets used by a SIL on a regular basis, and an “Atta boy” from his own father doesn’t have anywhere to go even though he feels pretty sick and used.
And yes, I know of someone like this.
I guess anyone who owns a copy of the movie “Summer of ‘42” is guilty of possessing child porn.
You don’t know of anyone who’s had it happen, do you? And even worse, you’ve set it up where if something happens to a son of yours, if they feel ugly or abused, they can’t come to you because you’ve already told them (via posts like this) that a MAN would be PROUD to be used by his teacher.
She’s somebody’s Sister and Daughter and well...
Gee, she’s far younger and prettier than me so I must be a 4 dog nighter, right??
How much more an abuse of power, then, the POTUS and an intern?
I know women who endure sex....because their husbands do not know what they are doing.
Oh, but that was a personal issue, and we shouldn’t even have asked the question
(because Bill kept abortion legal)
LOL!
You hang out on the Amazon boards don’t you ;)
Yes, that’s right I’ve be proud of my son for nailing his teacher...give me a break, I didn’t say that. I just don’t equate that (which is TOTALLY improper and wrong) with something criminal like sexually abusing a child.
Gag.
