Dad Allowed to Take Leave From Prison to See His Dying Little Girl

Thursday, March 27, 2008

OMAHA, Neb. — A 10-year-old Nebraska girl with terminal brain cancer had a simple last wish: to have her dad by her side as she lay on her death bed.

On Wednesday, seemingly against all odds, Jayci Yaeger's wish came true.

Her father, Jason Yaeger, who has been locked up in a South Dakota federal prison on methamphetamine charges, was allowed to see his daughter for what may be the last time.

He was furloughed after a barrage of letters and phone calls from around the country convinced officials to let him visit the hospital, according to KETV.com.

Jayci, who cannot speak, move or eat, could sense that her father was next to her and feel his touch, because she began breathing more heavily during his visit, the family told FOX News.

But to their disappointment, the visit lasted only about 30 minutes.

"She wants her dad. She goes to her room crying because she wants her dad," Jayci's mom, Vonda Yaeger, told KETV before the prison warden agreed to permit Jason to see his daughter.

The girl's condition has been described as minute-to-minute, and she recently suffered a stroke.

Makes you wonder why vermin like her father get to live and a precious one like the little girl dies? It is not up to us to question why I guess.

Where does it stop? This cost thousands of dollars.

I have no idea about the specifics of this case but in January a friend of mine had a sudden heart attack and died. His 23 year old son was in the county lock up was allowed to attend the visitation for less than 15 minutes but not the funeral. The family had to pay for the cost of the guards, transporation etc.

You’re crazy. I have no “animosity” toward this man.

I don’t like criminals, and I am incensed when MY money is stolen at gunpoint to pay for something like this, when I haven’t been back to visit my familY, dying or not, in six years, because I can’t justify the cost.

Let this CRIMINAL pay for his OWN expenses.

Sounds ok.

This man already had THREE visits, with no mention of reimbursement of expenses. That would change my objections.

This is about the most stupid thing I have heard....the Warden MUST be a democrat.....

The father is being released in AUGUST, it was a non viloent crime and his daughter is terminal.

He should have been allowed to stay with her til the end. I am ashamed of some of the stupid things I see happen....

This pig Reverend White can to the "islands" to duck the media and this kid can't have her father with her for a few days when he is about to be released in a couple of months

We have a chance to show compassion and maybe help a guy change his life, when we have already punished him for 4.7 years.....for a non violent crime.....sometimes I think people don't even use their heads as a hat rack....

I think the father should be pardoned.

Pardoned? No. Early release with strict probation. Maybe.

"So all criminals now get escorted to visit their sick kids?

What makes this child more deserving than all the others?"

Uh, the girl is DYING! Have you no compassion for the girl? She is asking to see her father one last time.

That’s not what I said. Go ahead and lie.

Perhaps you didn't mean to say it like you did ... but you did say it. A couple of moments of reflection before hitting "Post" is always useful, especially when commenting on a situation like this one.

OMG. Every child deserves a happy, healthy, meaningful childhood. It is her father. I have no use for crimminals, but the child should come first. I can’t imagine not seeing my dad when I was sick and going to die. I would have paid for him to see her, for HER sake. Let the poor thing die as happy as possible. I am sure this is worse punishment for him than all the jail time in the world.

Liar.

I NEVER said it was “frivolous”. I said it is NOT the taxpayers’ responsibility to pay for it.

Socialism runs rampant on FR these days.

So does heartless idiocy that disguises itself as "conservatism." And I DID say that ... to you.

The cost of this visit compared to the total cost of his incarceration is infinitesimal.

The cost of many things inmates and/or their family request is infinitesimal compared to the incarceration expense. That doesn't mean the wishes should be granted.

Should every criminal with a pregnant wife, girlfriend, or one nighter be provided time out at our expense to be there for the birth of their child? How could it not be considered cold hearted to deny a father the opportunity to be there for the birth?

The list could go on and on and on.

Then the government should have to pay for EVERY parent in the country to visit EVERY dying child. Why should non-criminals be penalized? They deserve the same treatment as criminals. Might as well throw in all medical care, food, lodgings.....

A friend lost his 12-year old daughter to a similar cancer almost one year ago. Being with his daughter during the last days before her death was priceless for both him and her.

Society cannot always be completely compassionate, but it should try its best to be so.

Nothing was posted last week about permission being granted. That is a new development.

From the 3/24/08 thread.

"has been denied repeated attempts to grant him a 30-day release."

"In response to inmate Yeager's request, he has been escorted by prison staff on three separate occasions to allow him to be with his daughter during this difficult time. Two of these trips have occurred within the past month. We have also assisted inmate Yaeger in maintaining telephonic contact with his family and daughter."
