Dad Allowed to Take Leave From Prison to See His Dying Little Girl
Thursday, March 27, 2008
OMAHA, Neb. A 10-year-old Nebraska girl with terminal brain cancer had a simple last wish: to have her dad by her side as she lay on her death bed.
On Wednesday, seemingly against all odds, Jayci Yaeger's wish came true.
Her father, Jason Yaeger, who has been locked up in a South Dakota federal prison on methamphetamine charges, was allowed to see his daughter for what may be the last time.
He was furloughed after a barrage of letters and phone calls from around the country convinced officials to let him visit the hospital, according to KETV.com.
Jayci, who cannot speak, move or eat, could sense that her father was next to her and feel his touch, because she began breathing more heavily during his visit, the family told FOX News.
But to their disappointment, the visit lasted only about 30 minutes.
"She wants her dad. She goes to her room crying because she wants her dad," Jayci's mom, Vonda Yaeger, told KETV before the prison warden agreed to permit Jason to see his daughter.
The girl's condition has been described as minute-to-minute, and she recently suffered a stroke.

One of those times when intelligence ruled the decision-making process. No one was hurt by the decision and any inconvenience was more than off-set by the warmth of mercy.
I’d rather pay for this than for an inmate’s internet/cable.
What a tragedy all the way around. Beautiful daughter...he looks like a nice enough guy...drugs can truly be the devils work. Sad
I don’t think the issue was ever about WHO paid for it, but whether he could see his dying daughter one last time before she dies, as her dying wish. Where is the compassion for the dying daughter here?
Where does it stop?
This cost thousands of dollars.
What a nasty thing to write! Why don’t you get your facts straight before you make ignorant comments such as:
Wonder if she got cancer from dad cooking up noxious toxic chemicals in the kitchen to fund his meth selling adventure?
He was convicted of dealing — not manufacturing — meth.
For the record, I agree that he should be forced to pay for this time out of his pocket. He brought his daughter's pain on himself through his stupid actions.
So all criminals now get escorted to visit their sick kids?
What makes this child more deserving than all the others?
I’m glad I don’t see a girl who is dying of cancer as a frivolous expense, like you do.
IIRC, the family offered to pay for the expenses, but I am not sure if that was accepted.
When a dying girl is looked at as simply a frivolous expense, God help our nation.
“Some people have no compassion whatsoever. They did the right thing in changing their minds after all the letters and phone calls.”
I agree. It’s about the daughter’s last wish, not the father.
You mean others that are dying or just in general?
That’s not what I said.
Go ahead and lie.
nice they are doing this for the little girl’s sake but this guy obviously didn’t have enough of his own compassion for her to avoid meth. now they are both paying the price.
Shhhhhhhhh, that just gets in the way of irrational bitching.
If the family paid every single cent, and this opportunity is offered to all inmates in a similar situation, then I guess it’s fine.
Okay....how sould I read this? You tell me:
Where does it stop?
This cost thousands of dollars.
I had pointed out that I’d much rather pay for something like this than for an inmate to have cable or internet access. Point is, since we’re spending taxpayer money on things inmates SHOULDN’T have, in my opinion, maybe it’s a good use of taxpayer funds to let a dying girl see her dad one last time.
But hey, for some, I guess benjies have replaced the heart.
Fine. YOU pay for EVERY SINGLE INMATE in the country who has a dying child to go visit. This is an outrageous expectation for criminals to have.
Maybe I’ll just demand an escort and free transportation when someone in my family is critically ill.
NOT OUR RESPONSIBILITY does not equal “frivolous”.
