Dad Allowed to Take Leave From Prison to See His Dying Little Girl

Thursday, March 27, 2008

OMAHA, Neb. — A 10-year-old Nebraska girl with terminal brain cancer had a simple last wish: to have her dad by her side as she lay on her death bed.

On Wednesday, seemingly against all odds, Jayci Yaeger's wish came true.

Her father, Jason Yaeger, who has been locked up in a South Dakota federal prison on methamphetamine charges, was allowed to see his daughter for what may be the last time.

He was furloughed after a barrage of letters and phone calls from around the country convinced officials to let him visit the hospital, according to KETV.com.

Jayci, who cannot speak, move or eat, could sense that her father was next to her and feel his touch, because she began breathing more heavily during his visit, the family told FOX News.

But to their disappointment, the visit lasted only about 30 minutes.

"She wants her dad. She goes to her room crying because she wants her dad," Jayci's mom, Vonda Yaeger, told KETV before the prison warden agreed to permit Jason to see his daughter.

The girl's condition has been described as minute-to-minute, and she recently suffered a stroke.

No one here has said this guy is a nice guy. The sticky issue has been whether we are punishing this dying child for the sins of her father.

No one here has condoned the crimes of her Dad. To us, he is not the issue. The issue is the dying child who had no choice in the occupation of her parent.

She probably knew nothing about that. All she cares about is that she is dying and wants her parents with her.

This is a case where the sins of the parent should not be paid by the child.

I assume we accept that choices have consequences - in this case, he chose to involve himself in meth, with the consequence that he cannot be with his dying daughter.

That being the case, the consequence should have a deterrent effect.

Yes, I realize I’m saying, “Too bad, so sad, shoulda thought about that before you started handling meth.”

Bottom line is, the consequence has to happen for it to be effective. We can’t just say, “Hey guy, we feel bad for your daughter, so your choice has no consequence.”

Make it hurt. Make it hurt bad. Parents who love their kids don’t want the kids to suffer, and knowing that it’s possible you will not see your child live or die should be a powerful motivator.

Trust me on this....I know first hand what drugs can do to good people....been there done that. (And paid the heavy price)

He does not look like the average user. We all make mistakes and should remember what we have learned is some one elses future education. {:^)

"The child should not be deprived of her father."

How many fathers were deprived of their daughters because their children were addicted by this meth dealer?

May he burn in Hell for all damnation before he ever sees his daughter. If I was in charge.

What sentiment was that? I was stating a fact of how the court system works. I know, I’ve delt with it.

I think the fact he only gets a 30 minute view of the final hours of his little girl is a start on a private hell right there.

The girl wanted hiim there, he went there and then he left before the final hour will arrive.

my view on this is that it was never about him, it is always about honoring the last request of a dying child.

Just remember now it is not just that he was locked in for what he did, he will not even have the chance so he could bury his own daughter. A double whammy. (assuming he feels anything)

Once again, you have made my point. Living in Indiana, we are all aware of the crime of meth.

This is not about the criminal, it is about a child who has no knowledge about the sins of her father. I do not care if the father is denied. I care about an innocent child who is unaware of her fathers sin that wants to be with him in the hours of her death.

For Gawdsake, have a little heart.

After this child dies, the Dad can rot in prison.

Like others have said, if someone other than the taxpayers cover all expenses, then go for it. Otherwise, keep him behind bars.

It's funny, I remember a time when people would do or not do certain things because it would bring suffering or shame to their family. As a society, we've pretty much eliminated shame. Now we're working on eliminating the pain we get from our bad choices. Then we wonder how in the world did we get such a culture that behaves little better then animals.

"I think this is one of those situations that calls for mercy to be extended. The child should not be deprived of her father."

This makes at least the fourth time that he has seen his daughter and vice-versa ... three of those visits haven been in the last thirty days. There has been plenty of mercy and compassion shown to this family and they are still complaining. I can't imagine the pain of losing a child, but these folks should still be thankful that the warden has done as much as he has.

And like I’ve said three times now, they DID pay for the visits. God, does anyone read anymore?

I don’t know, whats it take? I bet more than a few FReepers would choke up the dough to grant this little girl her last wish.

We can pay for sex changes, dental, and education for prisoners, but its just a waste of taxpayer money to give a dying child her last wish.

Conservatives are good people. I do not understand this.

I don’t either but I can tell you two things for certain. First, there is an awful lot of internet bravado that doesn’t extend to real life and second, there are an awful lot of folks that would be choking on their own words if something happened in their lives that they never saw coming but had condemned others for.

No, what is being worked on here is eliminating any more excessive pain to a blameless child. I couldn't give a rat's ass what you think of him, she is at the center of this and she is dying.

I would agree. I don’t have a lot of money, but if you have a site that I could donate to grant the wish of this little girl, let me know.

Life is short, we only go round once.

I’ve not seen them asking for money in any article I’ve read so I don’t have any direction to go on with that, sorry.

This story was posted last week. The father has been granted multiple visits to see the little girl, but the family want more and are pushing for clemency IIRC. He has NOT been denied time with his child!
This article doesn’t tell the whole story.

Okay, I am not in any way justifying the actions of this little girl’s Dad. I just think it isn’t any problem to give her her dying wish.

She’s had her wish granted 4 times. How many more times should it be granted before you feel the family should stop asking for a furlough and/or clemency (they’re asking for both, btw, and suing to overturn the warden’s decision).

When is it enough?
