Unions Blast Government Effort to Stop Hiring of Illegal Aliens By Susan Jones CNSNews.com Senior Editor March 27, 2008

(CNSNews.com) - The Department of Homeland Security has re-issued a rule that labor unions and some business groups oppose. The "no-match" rule is intended to stop employers from hiring illegal aliens, but critics say it will have unintended consequences.

The rule re-issued last week is the same one blocked by a federal district court in San Francisco last October.

The Homeland Security Department (DHS) said the newly issued "supplemental" rule addresses all three concerns raised by the court on Oct. 10, 2007.

The "supplemental" rule is essentially the same as the one issued in August. In the supplemental, DHS is simply offering "a more detailed analysis of how DHS developed the No-Match policy." DHS said the new, supplemental rule "will help responsible employers ensure that they are not employing unauthorized workers."

Employers send the Social Security Administration millions of earnings reports every year in which employees' names and Social Security Numbers do not match Social Security Administration records. In many cases, the Social Security Administration sends a "no-match" letter to the employer.

According to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, the no-match rule is "an important tool for cracking down on illegal hiring practices while providing honest employers with the guidance they need. "

Chertoff said the rule does not create any new legal obligations for businesses. "It simply outlines clear steps an employer may take in response to receiving a letter from the Social Security Administration indicating that an employee's name does not match the Social Security Number on file."

“It simply outlines clear steps an employer may take in response to receiving a letter from the Social Security Administration indicating that an employee’s name does not match the Social Security Number on file.”
::::::::
This just wreaks of the Bush border “policy”. And the Congress is just as complicit.

I’m glad to see someone is pointing up this issue. The labor unions are THE major force in support of illegal immigration and major $$$ backers of Democrats.

That is amazing. Unions, on the same side as illegal aliens? Talk about strange bedfellows! The unions *do* realize that illegal aliens are perhaps their biggest competition, don’t they? And I don’t see how the no-match rule could possibly have an effect on unionized workers (at least a significant portion), unless there are a lot of union workers who are illegal! Ahhh, maybe THAT’s the reason eh?

Unions no longer care about workers. Their membership (power and money) have been falling for years, so illegals provide new members.

It doesn't matter to Union leaders that this drives down long time members wages and job security.

I’ll take a wild guess that the unions see illegals as 1) future RATS and 2) future members. Future members mean more money in their coffers.

All that stands between 1 and 2 is making ‘em legal.

This is what I've been saying. What I can't figure out is why the rank and file put up with it. Don't they see the union bosses are selling them down the river?

The Mc Cain mantra:

"...considers the no-match rule an attempt to "regulate immigration on a piecemeal basis." Instead, it favors comprehensive immigration reform."

It's simple enough to prove you've changed your name, it's simple enough to correct a transposed number or middle initial; and it's simple enough to understand that if you're using a seven year old kld's SSN and have already used it to commit fraud a number of times, you've done enough to get fired...and then you can get the hell out of my country.

So they rant like heck when jobs get outsourced, but are stoo-pid to recognize the importation of cheaper labor as a threat? I guess the days of Samuel Gompers are long, long passed....

The mental image of union officers (on FRee Republic) is some thug with a Jersey accent and a cauliflower nose.

The reality is all the ones I met were Red Diaper babies, frequently from New York. And they are totally contemptuous of their members.

The labor unions are THE major force in support of illegal immigration and major $$$ backers of Democrats.

To a large extent, labor unions can only thrive in an era of large immigration. Such an era is characterized by businesses becoming agressive with their workforces (benefit givebacks, small wage raises, long hours, etc). Such was the case a century ago, and such is the case today.
