(March 25, 2008) -- Given the current tragedy in Iraq--hell, given the past five years--you would think the many pundits who agitated for an attack on that country, largely on false pretenses, would have take the opportunity of the arrival of the fifth anniversary of the war (or the 4000 dead milestone) to drop to their knees, at least in print, and beg the American public for forgiveness.
With more than 60 percent of their fellow Americans now calling the war a "mistake" and agitating for troop withdrawals--and the president's approval rating still heading south, thanks to their war--it would seem to be the right thing to do. We won't even mention the maiming of more than 20,000 young Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis.
You can probably name your favorite candidate. Let's take David Brooks of The New York Times, for example, and what he wrote exactly five years ago. He hasn't bothered to revisit his errors in judgement lately. At least Richard Cohen, another favorite whipping boy of antiwar critics, has accepted responsibility for some of his lapses.

What is this Mitchell guy talking about? The “pundits” who were wrong never seem to shut up. Telling us about all the failures, “they’ll be house to house fighting to take Baghdad”, “they’ll never draw up a Constitution”, “they’ll never have an election”, “a civil war has broken out”, “the surge will fail”.
How must it feel to be wrong all the time?
I really don't consider these people "fellow Americans." Just living in this country does not make you an American in the traditional sense of the word. As for this 60%, they'll be waving the flag again after the NEXT 9-11.

Of course, with that level of destruction on our nation it will no longer be possible to travel between cities and with the trucks halted roving bands of starving thugs will be keeping we with weaponry busy. Mercy! Lord forgive me but I hate liberals! They are all mouth and will get hundreds of thousands of American citizens killed and the nation brought to her knees to prove liberalism is superior to the ‘imagined’ jihadism of Islam. The media is teaching me to really despise these freaks.
Those who were wrong are the ones still having to bray like the jackasses they still are, in order to change the correct policies. Those who were correct aren’t going anywhere and will make plenty of noise when it’s appropriate.
Yeah, that 60% doesn’t do much to impress me either. At any given time, the country is comprised of 40% or so soft-shell commies who are quickly evolving into Elois, 40% or so sensible types who know what patriotism is, and 20% undecided human waffles who can be led by the nose from headline to headline. That the MSM has convinced the waffles to side with the commies is not a revelation.
This FReeper, B.O., rejoyced when the war started....and, furthermore, I want it to continue until all the wild muslims are either tamed or dead. If this means taking out Iran, Syria, et al....and...yes....even Saudi Arabia.
I hate living under the continual threat of this muslim, or that muslim sending a wild-eyed lunatic to blow us up as we have dinner, or while watching a ball game....or worse, the whack-job moockmood finally getting a nuke and smuggling it into Dallas.

Yes, he probably was happier then, because it wasn't in the news. Iraq didn't have a free media. That's what most of them are really upset about: not the war itself, they haven't felt any effects from it. It's the headlines. They turn on the news and it's just so UPSETTING. They don't want UPSETTING news. The great thing about communist countries is they don't have a free press, and we don't see the imprisoned artists of Cuba, the starving citizens of North Korea, the forced labor of China, the steaming slums of Venezuela... and so it isn't so UPSETTING.
And this guy is probably an Obamite. Because Obama is SOOTHING. Not UPSETTING.
They really won't shut up then. Look at the travesty called the 9/11 Commission where everything was blamed on the Bush administration including not retaliating for the October 2000 attack on the Cole.
According to Special Report tonight, the percentage of Americans who want a withdrawal on a timetable unrelated to the security of Iraq is 18 percent. An inconvenient fact.
Well, one thing is for sure, if the nation survives the massacre, to rebuild America the obsequious liberals will have to be exterminated then.

I sent a letter to the editor of the site:
Dear Editors
The article by Greg Mitchell is a bit disingenuous and very short-sighted.
Mr. Mitchell seems to suggest that those who supported the war made big mistakes, but are now silent - and he feels free to call them to account.

Since the alleged “pretenses” are covered in great detail in the Resolution to Authorize the Use of Force (HJR 114). There are 23 “Whereas” statements that list problems with Saddam Hussein - and reasons why Saddam Hussein should be removed. Fewer than 4 of those “Whereas” pertain to claims of actually having WMDs. Now that Iraq has been liberated, we could look through the archives and show Saddam’s support of terrorism to a greater extent as further justification. In the interviews prior to his execution, he admitted that he expected to attempt to acquire WMDs. And after the the efforts to liberate Iraq started - the Oil for Food scandal was exposed, where UN officials, French and German officials were found to be “on the take” and over $20 billion was being skimmed off by Saddam to fund his palaces and weapons programs.
I would guess that Mr. Mitchell has no concern for the oppression of the Iraqi people, nor does he care that Saddam funded terrorism and the murder of innocent people, primarily in Israel, but also extended elsewhere. Mr. Mitchell obviously doesn’t worry about the mass graves (something left out of the resolution), nor that Saddam had used WMDs against the Iraqi people and against Iran during the Iran-Iraq war (this was directly in the resolution, but was hinted about.)
So I am left to assume that Mr. Mitchell is either uninformed, or an uncaring and insensitve individual who doesn’t care that a murderous tyrant chooses to rule a country as a god, with the absolute power of life and death. He must not care that a single individual can command the financial resources available to someone who controls 20% of the known oil reserves, and can fund terrorism world-wide. He must be willing to trust that nothing bad will come out, even though historically, Saddam’s fingerprints are on many terrorist attacks, including aiding and assisting those implicated in the first attack on the World Trade Center .
This sounds like Mr. Mitchell endorses “divine right of kings” to stay in power.
Maybe we were unable to find Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq, but we found evidence of prior development and acquisition, and there is ample evidence of the use of WMDs. But we have also found amongst media pundits like Mr. Mitchell - weapons of mass diversion. It wasn’t just about WMDs; his claims are false and ignore the bigger picture. By repeating this lie, he acts as he wishes we would give up, abandon Iraq, and retreat in shame, and permit the 25 million people in Iraq to suffer any fate that could fall their way - and then try to place the blame on those trying to bring about the needed peace and stability. In doing so, he gives aid and assistance to Al Qaeda and motivates those who continue the fight on the other side. Thanks for nothing!
